Hobby Master HG1401 1/48 SdKfz 222

Post by StormyThoughts » Sat Jul 02, 2011 1:21 pm

Hi all

Just got it, and since 1/48 is my fav scale, and light armoured recon 222 is one hell of nice looking vehicle, I thought I will share some observations and pics.

It comes in a standard HM display box, same size as M7 Priest is in, with 2 screws holding it tight with the base. It is painted overall grey and represents a proper mid-production vehicle from 24 Panzer Div. during the battle at the outskirts of Stalingrad. I like HM didn't do 'scratched' paint effect we could see on first PzII, IMO it was over applied and made the tank look unrealistic. Instead I have noticed some areas of darker grey. At the beginning I thought these are glue stains and HMs QC missed it, but the regularity and no shine suggests these are on purpose and I actually like it. There is also some wash applied. The mesh cover comes in 2 varieties: 1-piece closed and 2-piece for open configuration. These are solid and plastic :( stored separately from the vehicle, in a blister under the base. Flak 38 looks fine, it's bored and can be raised and lowered, the turret itself doesn't rotate. There is also some rudimentary interior visible and wheels roll :) Overall, I think it looks great and a great release, a must have, considering it's same price as HMs 1/72 tanks.

Hi ST,

We just got Hobby Master's 1:48 Kubelwagen in stock. I have to say I am impressed with this model and scale. It could be the new 1:72!

I doubt it. 1/48 is with us a long time now. It meant to be a sweet spot between 1/35 and 1/72 (decent details and compact size), but usually it was as expensive as 1/35, so it never got popular

Yes, I recently received this model as well (from a Hong Kong e-seller). Heartily concur with your review - only strange notes are the relatively simple anti-grenade grilles for the turret, and the fact that the turret does not turn.
I intend to remedy these deficiencies, by first investing in 1/48 scale photo-etch turret grilles for the Sd.Kfz 222. This is available from the Czech firm 'Hauler' (# HLX48249), readily sold by several e-sellers.
Painting and attaching the grilles will be simple; tough part will be detaching the turret piece and the post for the cannon, so the post can be drilled out and a turning pin inserted.
