Re: looking for a small b-17 model
Sounds like you need something in 1/144 scale. Corgi and Dragon both make a B-17 in this scale. if that is too big, I think Model Power makes one about 1/160 scale.aferguson wrote:i'm looking for a pre-built b-17 model that is around 3 or 4 inches long. Is there anything available?

The Dragon/Corgi version will run you about $25, the Modelpower B-17 1/155 scale will run $15, You also might be able to find them on sale a little cheaper.

thanks........i was originally thinking more like 1/200 scale but couldn't find anything..
I'm now thinking about the new ray 1/100 one. Classic Planes i think is the series. They're only about $10 or less each, if they can be found. I want to get a bunch of them so i'm trying to find the cheapest option.

I have examples of both the Corgi and Model Power B-17s. I actually prefer the Model Power version. It is a little smaller than 1:144, but close enough that it does not look out-of-scale next to the 21c 1:144 planes. Believe it or not, the Model Power B-17 also has some finer details that lack on the Corgi B-17 such as all glazed windows and turrets.

I like the looks of the 1/144 F-Toys Flying Fortress. The proportions and detail look good.
You have to put them together, but they are pre painted kits from candy boxes in Japan.

You can buy a whole Heavy Bomber Set

lots of good choices, need to decide what size to go with...i'm leaning towards 1/100 scale at the moment.
I also found a little b-17 made by Fast Lane. It's only about 4 inches long or so but pretty well done. Unfortunately it comes in a pack of 5 planes, the others i'm not interested in, so it would be an expensive way to amass several.
I'm planning on building a little b-17 bomber stream and have a custom 1/18 me-109 lobbing 21cm rockets at it. I also have a 1/18 scale Natter wood model, that i could have firing rockets at the bomber stream too.

Does anyone remember the B17 put out by Franklin Mint way back when they started doing the cars? This wasnt their typical 1:48 scale work, but a scale slighly smaller than HO, maybe 1:100 or 1:120th scale. Everything worked on it it including operating landing gear, bomb bay doors, turrets and the top deck came off to show the cockpit and radio room. I have one, but I cant recall what I paid for it at the time. I guess they dont make them anymore...

I have quite a few 1:100 scale Armor Collection planes. All fighters.
Also Postage Stamp Model Power planes in that scale I used to buy at Hobby Lobby when they had them.
Never seen a bomber though.
There was a time when I was collecting that scale before I got into 21st Century Toys 1:18 and 1:32.
Recently found a big box full of them I had stashed in the garage.

FWIW, picked up a "BigBird" 1/144th B-17F Memphis Belle and a 1/150th Model Power Postage Stamp B-17G. Both are sharp and worthy of display.
The BigBirds can be found on evilbay and elswhere on the 'net, the Postage Stamps in Hobby Lobbys, Hobbytowns, etc
Edit:
On closer inspection, the Model Power B17G is a bit nicer than the pre-painted plastic CafeReo "BigBird" B17F.
You have to "snap" in the wings on the BigBird to finish it, and in the process - it flexes and falls into pieces and requires reassembly, as the BigBird plane is for the most part simply snapped together to begin with.

Would that be the 1:96 scale B-17 Flying Fortress- "Shoo Shoo Baby" made by Franklin Mint as an official issue for the United States Air Force in 1989?krieglok wrote:Does anyone remember the B17 put out by Franklin Mint way back when they started doing the cars?
