Quoting from an advertisement for some Aviation Art...

"These ambushes soon proved to be highly effective, with the Luftwaffe losing many jets to the guns of the USAAF.

To counteract the mounting losses special units were formed, equipped with the Focke-Wulf 190 D-9 ("Dora Neun"), regarded by many as the Luftwaffe's finest piston-engined fighter of the war. Manned by experienced veterans of JG52 and JG54, they were tasked with providing top cover for the jets at their airfields at Munich , and Ainring near Salzburg.

In order to make these aircraft clearly discernable to the German anit-aircraft gunners, their undersides were painted red with white stripes, thus the legend of the "parrot wing" was born. One of this unit's elements was the so-called "strangler swarm" led by Lt. Heino Sachsenber. Heinz Kreb's latest painting shows Sachsenberg in his Focke Wulf 190 Dora 9 "Rote 1"..."

So judging by the red (Rote) number... I would guess then that our red 3 is also a member of this unit... but I am on a business trip and can't check to see what badge or emblem is on the candy cane.

Thought this was interesting to explain the existence of the stripes.

Red 3 is in the Profile Album. It belonged to JV-44 and flown by Hauptmann Waldemer Wubke. Check it out when you get a chance!

Yes.... I saw it when I was looking for the Nightfighting 109E. Pretty neat. What we should encourage 21st Century to do is to include an information card or certificate... that describes the plane they have produced. Corgi does this with their small collectibles. 21stC is obviously doing the research... so why not just put it in the box with the plane. If it was done nicely, we could have a book with these certificates in it......

I 150% agree with you on that. That would add some class to an already incredible product! We oughta pass that on. Information Cards.....

I once saw the box for the Ultimate Soldeir version of the FW-190D-9 (not the Motorworks) and its description of the aircraft on the back was the most detailed I had seen for a 21st aircraft to date. There wasn't any specific note made about either plane, but the development and performance specs were covered well.

I agree that the inclusion of an "information card" telling something about the actual depicted aircraft would be very cool! No reason why it can't be done.

I have that version of the FW-190 (with the info card on back). Same with a few other aircraft.

I like that idea also like the FOV cards. It would be nice if they told who the piolt was and how many kills and so on.It would be nice for the armor also they could tell you who command and what action they seen.
