I've never heard anyone mention it before, so I thought I would share... 
After watching the When We Left Earth show on the Discovery Channel, I dug it back out from some corner of my attic and decided it should see the light of day again. The model is made by the IPI Toys company and cost around $30 when it was sold.
This set is, in short, highly detailed! It comes with all the parts of the Apollo Spacecraft including the Command Module, Service module, and Lunar Module. The capsule detaches from the service module and the ascent stage detaches from the LM decent stage. The ships can dock and antennas can be deployed. the CM and LM open up (albeit inaccurately) to hold the crew figures. The figures are articulated. The paintscheme is accurate, but the national markings and the thruster jets on the capsule are decals. A bunch of accessories including a flag and various scientific equipment are included to set up a "Tranquility Base" diorama. The set also came with a plastic sheet depicting the lunar terrain, but it looks dorky and is not pictured. You can also press a button on the underside of the LM which plays a recording of Neil Armstrong's "That's one small step for man..." speech. 1:48 scale is nearly perfect for this ship and there are also 1:32 model kits of the Apollo spacecraft. Still, I would kill to get spacecraft in 1:18
