1/16
1/16
I was looking at some 1/16 scale accessories for a WWII diorama.
Is 1/16 all that off from 1/18?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The key is to use a 1/16 vehicle in a group of 1/18 vehicles that are not made in 1/16.
Like a 1/16 M-26 - who's to notice the difference and it's not made in 1/18. We all know it's bigger than a Sherman... sooooo.
A second example is a Highway 61 Firetruck. They make a WW2 RAF engine that looks great with no work to it and with a few 1/18 figs it looks good next to your planes.
Just don't gp overboard.... I tried to use a 1/6 Kettengrad pulling a 1/18 Me-262 but it just doesn't work..

MG40K, here is a comparison between 1/18 and 1/16

The sign of a great model is that one’s eye is not drawn to any one feature, yet one can study it for hours and continually find something new.
ah yes the father and son Tiger tanks photo..
Many of the weapons made by 21c are 1/16 scale, or very close. Most people would probably not notice the differece. Other small accessories you can get away with too. But unless you're very forgiving, tanks, large artillery pieces etc are going to be quite noticably too big.
You may be able to get away with it if, like TTT says, you don't mix in the same subject in two different scales. For example a 1/16 Pershing or T-34 with your xd stuff. But if you have some knowledge on the subject it will be pretty obvious that they are too big compared to the other tanks. Whether that bothers you or not is up to you. Sometimes it might, sometimes it might not. I have a 1/16 T-34 and while it's big i can live with it. I got a 1/16 Leopard 2a5 and it dwarfed my Abrams, so i had to get rid of it.

Never saw a comparison of the two and it's pretty substantial. Far more than I'm willing to fudge... Guess I'll just stick with 1:18, however I may get a 1:16 for fun because man they look like a blast to run around the yard with... The detail's outstanding and far superior to XD I'm afraid. That's disappointing considering the price difference isn't THAT much.
EDIT:
Here's an odd question... If any of you can help, I appreciate it.
Anyone with Henlong tanks, I'm curious... How wide are the tracks on:
-M41
-M26
-Tiger-I
-Panzer-III
I'm curious for a couple reasons how wide the tracks are on those items, and particularly which is widest.

They are fun, especially for chasing the cat around the house! Sound and smoke are nice additions especially the starting engine and shut down! Cannon recoil w/sound and machine gun w/sound and light too!Jesse James wrote:Never saw a comparison of the two and it's pretty substantial. Far more than I'm willing to fudge... Track size - I have both the Tiger I and the M41A3 and the tracks on both measure 1.75" in total width

They're the same width?
Thanks for that info... The Tiger I was mostly interested in, so that helps a lot.

For what it's worth, I have used 120mm Verlinden (VLS) accessories with many of my 1/18 vehicles.
For example, I have VLS C-rations on the back of a Gate 1/18 jeep and they look great.
I've used VLS MRE's in dioramas with my 21C Humvees, 21C Bradleys and BBI LAVs without any problems at all.
I used a VLS ACAV kit on a 21C M113 and it looks pretty darn good (IMHO). If you hold a picture of an actual ACAV up next to it, you notice the shields are a little big, but even having seen pictures (and seen a real ACAV in person), the 120mm set doesn't look THAT MUCH oversized (again, my opinion, and your mileage may vary)...
Basically, I agree with the previous poster who said that you should only use 1/16 / 120mm stuff that someone doesn't do in 1/18.
I have a model kit of a Trumpeter 1/16 modern Chinese tank that I keep telling myself that I'm either going to start or, or sell... I just hope someone doesn't do one in 1/18 first...

All of us have skeletons in the closet. Only some of us have bodies in the freezer, though...

as for the 1/20 trumpeter tank, its great for customising, and an easy build. someone posted comparison pics of one next to a 1/18 m1 a while ago...if you cant find it, ill post those pics as i saved them at the time (but they arent my pics). if you intend to use the type 98 as a 1/18, you can make it a t -72 derivative. the type 98 has the chassis of the t-72 but lengthened by a meter and has a set of roadwheels added. all that is really necessary for it to work as 1/18 is for turret customisation. the t 72 is significantly smaller and lighter than its wetern counterparts in reality, so it isnt a big issue.
the scale difference of 1/18 and 1/16 is less of an issue with different vehicles obviously than two of the same in different scales, and visually it makes a big difference in the latter case, whereas i dont think it is too bad in the former situation. hope it helps..
