Took the plunge, bought some high end stuff yesterday

Post by 9th Waffen SS » Mon Mar 17, 2008 10:49 am

I attended a toy soldier show yesterday in Seacaucus, NJ, with my two boys. A nice show, lots of vendors, good quality stuff there. Anyhow, after agonizing a while over the decision, I decided to branch out from my 21st C and FOV collecting, and purchased a Hummel from King & Country and a 222 from Collector's Showcase.

This was my first ever purchase of any of the higher-end stuff, and I am quite happy with them. While pricey, they are really cool, and I am already looking forward to securing a few more items, such as the K&C Gepard and Raupen Schlepper Ost.

I have JagdPanther to blame, after seeing his Hummel in the thread he started showcasing his collection, it pushed me over the edge! While I am still going to collect the offerings of 21st C and FOV, I am now looking to fill in some gaps in the collection with the higher priced stuff that is unique. Just wondering if I am a "traitor" for straying from lower-priced offerings....

And for what it is worth, my kids made out like bandits, getting all kinds of Star Wars stuff they found at good prices, and my oldest scored a plastic Mk IV Panzer for $4. He was thrilled.

As an FYI, for those in the NY/NJ area of operations, there is a show on April 13th in Wayne NJ coming up.

It is interesting to compare the expensive stuff to the less expensive items. Last year, I went the long buck and bought a Frontline German 155 howitzer and crew from a dealer in Denville, NJ. I like artillery and it was a nice piece. Nothing like all heavy weight metal figures and equipment.

I forgot about the Meadowlands show. Wayne is nearby, I will try for that one...

Yeah, the Elephant is really nice, I might have to add that to the "wish list". I am currently looking at the Gepard and Raupen Schlepper Ost as my next "must haves" along with the Grille...I have a FOV Elephant on pre-order, but I think the K&C one might have to find its way into my collection too.

As for the Collector's Showcase 222, it is really, really nice. I had to buy it, as it has 9th SS Hohenstaufen markings on it, and since the 9th is "my" unit, it was simply something I had to have. Its got a lot of nice detail on it, its hefty in weight, the figure that comes with it is painted well, its very well packaged, the dimensions look right, and overall, I think it is a really well done piece. With only 300 made, its definitely a piece to consider. I may pick up their Marder also, even though I just bough the 21st C one a week or so ago...

I don't personally like their armor at all. I do like their figures however, especially the Berlin 1938 series.

You talkin' aboot my Dragon Armor Hummel in 1:72? Or are you referring to Jagdpanther's K&C Hummel? 'Cause I can't afford high-end stuff like that

Yup, methinks you're referrin' to Jagdpanther. Bad Jagdpanther! Haha, j/k.

Silly me, yes, you are correct! I fixed the original post. Proper blame is now assigned, LOL!

None the less, your impressive collection has also spurred me on as well to accelerate my collection, so ChairmanMilo, you don't get off scott-free!

Succumbing to temptation, I ordered an Sd.Kfz 232 8-Rad and a Luchs from New Model Army at Treefrog Treasures yesterday, as they were on sale. Can't wait for them to arrive.

I think the Collector's Showcase line is in some ways superior to King and Country's...the sculpting and poses are first rate (heck, their armor has metal tracks!). I met the sculptor/founder (Brian Levy) at the Westcoaster Toy Soldier show earlier this month, and was very impressed with him and his product line. In fact, having been a big King and Country collector in the past I couldn't believe how another company could rival KC in terms of quality...but they do! I sold my KC country a couple of years ago to focus on my vintage plastic and more mainstream offerings from FOV and 21C. But Collector's Showcase got me back into metal...they're running an awesome special on their Arnhem line (get the whole line for $550 with a free gift and no shipping charge through 3/31). As I called to take advantage of the offer, I was also able to get an even better deal on his entire Tobruk 1943 line. I got both complete sets for just over a grand (delivered!). Anyone interested, contact them (and if you need their number, shoot me an email, and I can hook you up directly with Brian...he's as friendly a guy as there is!)
--Mike, gitoys
btw, I'm just a collector...no stake in the company whatsoever :)

The only down side is the wheels don't move on the 222 Armoured car but do on K & C
