"Zero Down" Driniumor river bridge, New Guinea 44

"The Driniumor river flows north out of the foothills of the Torricelli mountains
into the Pacific Ocean at Aitape on the northern coast of New Guinea."

"The river is 30 to I00 yards wide and if the river is not rising, can easily be
crossed by walking over rocks and sandbars strewn with dead trees and
brush while avoiding the occasional deep hole."

Image

The Japanese built a new bridge to enable their assault on Port Moresby
after engineers from the Aussie 3rd Infantry blew the primary bridge
upstream two weeks ago.

Image

Japanese pilots confident from their victory at the Battle of Coral Sea flew
scathing air support missions from the Aitape Air Base. The air strips had
come under increasing amounts of daytime air raids as the Americans learned
to dodge the wall of anti-aircraft fire the Japanese had set up in the Owen
Stanley mountain range. Frequently Zeros on their way back from a
strafing mission were taken by surprise and put down into the Jungle.

Pilots that were lucky managed to land in friendly territory tenaciously defended by experienced troops of the Japanese 18th Army.

Image

Units from the U.S. 124th Infantry were pressing hard up the trail forcing the
Japanese into an aggressive retreat into the deep jungle, often defending
territory that had been their "rear area" hours before..

Image

Despite valiant efforts and suicidal wave attacks, the Japanese were
eventually forced off of the island at a cost of over 10,000 dead..

Sorry if I'm stepping out of bounds here, I believe that bridge is the PTE bridge which I'm picking up this weekend. Big Lots here in Columbus had them last weekend, but I passed them up to get some figures. :D BTW, that is a really great dio Grunt1!! Excellent job!

Thanks guys! The bridge is indeed the one from PTE. Two actually.. I snipped off the tabs on one side and hooked them together.

The palm trees I picked up at Pets Smart a while back. I think they still have them.

The hut is Play Mobile and I think Morian Miner inspired that one. His was covered with rit dye which I need to do at some point.

Side note: There are two big flaws. Not historical issues but more like bloopers that I discovered afterwards. (Doh!).. Can anyone find them?

What shouldn't be in this picture?
Hint: That ain't no tree

What's wrong with this picture?
Hint: Falling down

Yes, that was very tempting and may yet happen. Oh and I was pretty much a total ETO guy until you started doing all of your USMC projects so thanks for the inspiration. :D
