Adding Motorized Features to Models
Posted: Tue Jun 19, 2007 6:10 pm
I've seen several requests for information regarding motorizing features on some models (such as propellers)...and I came across this in an email sales flyer I received earlier today. It's a short "tips n tricks" article and I hope they don't mind the reprint here, but the information and links were dead on target. The article appears in the current Great Models Webstore email. So....if you're in the mood, puruse this!!!
TIPS BY RAY: I got a couple of good questions this last week!
From Dennis:
“I have a B-17, B-29 and B-36 that I want to motorize the props. I have purchased 7mm and 4mm pager motors to do this.
I have discovered that I need to see some one’s work in this area so I can copy the proper procedure.
I went to ARC and they have one example of what I want to do, but the info was not very detailed.
I am not too sure what kind of “electronics” will be involved with this, but surely somebody has done what I want to do.
Can you point me in the right direction? I am stumped (grounded) for the time being. “
Hello Dennis!
Great idea! I believe I know the model you are talking about, over on ARC. I saw it too, but have never attempted it on any of my models. I have never seen a pager motor before, so I am not sure how appropriate they are for motorizing props. I suppose once you take the off-center weight or whatever they use to make the pager buzz those motors are no different than any other. With that in mind, I have a couple of other articles for you to look at that do a better job of showing how they did it and maybe that will help you. First, here is another ARC model, by Alfonso Pereira: http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/G ... al3990.htm . Next, is an example of the work by Chris from Germany on the LSP site. Chris builds nearly all his models as cut-aways with motorization. That is why he is called ‘Chris the Ripper!’ You can look at several of his model on the site, here is his Trumpeter Corsair: http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index ... =7455&st=0 . Lastly, another model from ARC, this time by Brian Boot. It is of a Trumpeter Mi-24, and he did some tricky engineering for his motorization of the blades. Might get some ideas as he does a pretty good job of showing how he did it: http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/F ... ea1014.htm .
Lastly, here is a site you might want to check out if you really want to go nuts with your aircraft, they offer a bunch of different lighting effects: http://www.voodoofx.com/index.html . Most of their sets are for sci-fi kits, but there generic stuff and some of the sets could easily be modified for aircraft kits. Hope that helps, Dennis!!
