Kursk Dio...need input and have questions

Post by metalwar » Thu Feb 01, 2007 9:55 am

I am wanting to do some kind of 1:18 dio about Kursk. Probably a staging area setup as I don't have room for a large 1:18 dio. I have ask a few questions before but here are some of my thoughts and questions. I am not sure on the Division yet but probably the 1st Panzer or Grossdeutchland. I am wanting to use the Panzer IV-E short barrel ( I know that it would be in very limited use at that time), and a SDKFZ 251/1. I am going to re-paint the SDKFZ #13 to plain Dunkelgelb as well as the new Pak 40. I was wondering if it would be highly unlikely to have the panzer in grey with some field added Dunkelgelb camo added over the greyinstead of a completely re-paint panzer in Dunkelgelb.

Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Kursk was right around the time of the switch over from panzer grey to the new three colour scheme. Some vehicles did not have time to be repainted properly and still had their base coat of panzer grey with any combination of the new colours over sprayed on it....usually the green and brown as the base yellow was intended to be added at the factory, with green and brown issued in the field for local appliction as individual units saw fit.

The S1 Hanomag, which is dark grey with an overspray of green, is a good example of how many vehicles looked just after the change to the new 3 colour system. In some cases it was months before vehicles received a repainting in overall dark yellow.

So in other words, it would be fine to have some vehicles in dark grey with an application of any combination of dark yellow, green and brown applied over top. However, since there was a lot of time for the build up at Kursk, a good chunk of the vehicles had had time to be repainted in at least dark yellow. So i wouldn't have too many still in panzer grey, if you want to look somewhat representative of Kursk.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...
