Small Scale Military Headquarters

Curious as to what projects the customizers on this board are considering and how big some of them may get.

I guess bombers and ships would most likely be the largest subjects. I know Red is supposed to be doing a troop transport but has been very quiet on that front for a while.

I am seriously considering doing a ship myself. I've wanted to do one for years, but haven't been sure how to approach it. I've selected a Japanese destroyer as the subject. It will be 21 feet long if completed. I was thinking of building it in seven, 3 foot long sections that assemble into the completed ship. When not being played with, er, displayed, i was going to hang the seperate sections on the wall, where they would be nicely out of the way, as there is no way i have enough room to leave it set up on a permanent basis. Anyway, just thinking out loud at the moment.

So what have you folks got planned?

Scratch built? I was once considering a 1/18 M16A2 w/M203. That's about as far as my scratch building skills go.

I was thinking what would be need for a 1:18 WWII aircraft carrier “USS hornet” a few months back it woudl have to built above the waterline

depends how "serious" you are talking. I've thought about doing a carrier as an actual boat after I had read about some guy who built a landing craft in 1/12 or 1/6 for him to ride around a lake in. Figure a small escort carrier, and cut out part of the deck for a driver compartment. Or, do a modern Arleigh Burke destoyer. Then, if you got real adventuresome, had an RC heli to fly off it.

Or, do a concrete pad out back as an aircraft carrier flight deck. Again, lots of cool ideas, but doubt I will ever get to them.

There is a german guy who made a 1/20 Graf Spee that he rides around a lake in. Part of the superstructure folds open for him to sit in. It's around 40 feet long and took him years to build.

That would be amazing to do a carrier that way. You could mount all kinds of 1/18 corsairs, avengers and (soon) Hellcats on the deck and zoom around the lake..

I think somebody should do the Bismarck. Only about 44 feet long in 1:18. I would do it, but my wife says I can't remove any walls in our house.

It would have to be done in sections and be able to come apart in sections. And there would be no bottom of the hull.

The only fly in the ointment is I don’t know a dam thing about woodworking.

Funny.... my wife has the same problem.

i'm planning on making my destroyer out of cardboard. If they can make a 24 foot long Starfighter that way (see 'paper models revisited' thread in off topic forum), i figure it should be just as doable with a 21 foot destoyer and will be alot lighter and easier to make.

I am considering doing the K-5 railway gun. It's rediculously simple in design. The thing is just big!

Hey yall---AFERGUSON is right---Im working on a LST but it is comeing along slowly!!!! I have just been looking for the right stuff to use and it is so big I just need to take my time on this one!!!I did come across a old John Boat for sell and the 1st thing I thought of would be how easy it could become a Aircraft Carrier with alittle Plywood and some custom work!!! But at this time I already have alot going on---so maybe one day!!! I think it would be neat if a few customizers could get together and work on a custom ship ---but there is alot of problems to be worked out in that Ideal!!! ---RED---

I've been thinking about doing a bridge for my trains. This is a vertical lift bridge. We have one here in Peoria that the the local Railroad uses. I wouldn't have much room to make it to scale though.

As far as making a 1/18 aircraft carrier, just buy an old 45' flatbed trailer and then all you have to do is build the con' tower. Then you can pull it to model shows. (Or someone else's back yard.)

I saw a carrier years ago in an rc magazine. It was huge and it was built on some type of real boat. You could land planes on it. I wish I kept every model magazine I ever had for a reference.

Display it with just one wing mounted and move the unused wing's nacelle to the wing you do have installed and you have the look of a 4 engine Herc. and have saved alot of space.
