F-86 FB

So I'm sitting around, waiting for the second "Mitch's Squitch" to arrive. My sister (bless her heart) ordered one along with "Huff" for my birthday. She didn't realize I was on the prowl and found one at the local WM. Instead of canceling the order, I told her (emphatically) I still wanted both. What to do with the second? Easy....a fighter-bomber F-86F-30. I've already started modding a couple of 500lb bombs and with the in-hand "Squitch" I can start making bomb racks and pylons. Change of markings and VIOLA! Comments?

You can make it into an FJ-2 or -3 Fury and find a good Navy paint job for it. Here are some sugesstions.

Or you could fill in two gun ports and instead of a pop-gun armed F86 you could have a RAAF canon armed, Avon engined Ca27 Sabre like this one.....

Suggestions

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I seriously considered an FJ, but I realized that that would take some major surgery. The inlet area, tail and mid fuselage are vastly different from the standard F30 model and re-contouring that area is a little out of my patience and skill. As for the Australian Sabre....that's a definate option. The Aussie AF operated F30 fighter-bombers in the Korean War as well....the major difference being the markings (I can do that). As for changing the armorment, I'd have to trash the weapons bay and I'm not going to do that. The cannon armed Sabre came late whereas the 6X.50 cals were retained on early Sabres. I'd rather not change the classic lines of the Sabre...at least not yet. Perhaps when the Sabre appears on the clearance isle for $15.00 I'll sacrafice one or two. Anyway, the master prototype pylon is almost there and the 500lb bombs are also ready (except for paint). Film at eleven!

So is there gonna be a XD customizers convention next time Mark is up this way?

Sounds like a good reason for some more good Mexican food and a couple Dos XX.

There is a Canadair CL-13 at Cavanaugh,
a F-86H at Pate, and a Sabredog north of D/FW at a VFW hall on a pole.

There are some pretty hard core collectors in the Lone Star State Folkwolfe. You need to join Rogue, Nathanita, and myself the next time I'm in Dallas for chow and shop talk. As for the subject at hand. I like the fighter/bomber idea. It's simple and you won't pop a blood vessel in your head trying to modify a fuselage. Make sure you post some pictures when your done.

OK...I think I got a good start on markings. I've decided to go with a South African Air Force F-86F-30 assigned to the No. 2 Squadron (Flying Cheetahs) out of Osan AB from Jan '53 through Sep '53. The particular a/c is "K" 604 named BEVKENEVE. Should look interesting next to "Mitch's Squitch" and "The Huff" with SAAF markings and a pair of 500lb bombs hanging next to the 120 gal combat tanks.

Sounds good, post some pics when you get it finished.

Got the second "Squitch" this afternoon. Now I get the tedious task of removing the US markings and correcting those left off by 21C. I also finally found a good reference for the markings and they are being mocked up right now. Ain't it COOL?

I finally had an opportunity to take a few pictures. They are rough-outs for the bomb pylons and sway braces. A little more work is needed to shape the pylons correctly, then everything will be ready for paint. The other "Mitch" arrived and I've started the process of removing the markings not needed. Also, we finalized the SAAF markings and I should have a set on hand shortly. The major hurdle yet to be crossed is matching the silver paint used by 21C on the Sabre to begin with. It has been very cold around these parts lately and I haven't been able to shoot any tests yet. Enjoy the pics....

Those look prettty nice. As for matching the paint, have you tried Testors spray silver #1246. It's pretty close.
