It was a nice day out today so I took my stuff outside to take some pics.
This first pic is of what I have so far. Loco, tender, flatcar, and custom track.
<a href="http://img402.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000435pl2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6411 ... pl2.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
Side view of the locomotive. I don't think you'll find anything closer to 1/18 than this. This is the 4-6-2 wheel configuration. The dimensions are 1/18 accurate as far as the width and height.
<a href="http://img125.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000436bd5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/2348 ... bd5.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
View of the cab. The door to the firebox opens.
<a href="http://img293.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000442ra8.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/5135 ... ra8.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
This is the shorter flatcar made by Buddy L. The Sherman looks good on it.
<a href="http://img464.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000437gk9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/3118 ... gk9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
Back view of flatcar and Sherman. I can put the posts in the stake pockets and still fit the tank on it.
<a href="http://img48.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000438rp7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/7603/1000438rp7.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
This is the water tower I made. It's 20" tall. I made it so the funnel can be raised or lowered. My next projects will be a coaling tower and a train station.
<a href="http://img528.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000439hl4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/7313 ... hl4.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
<a href="http://img293.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000441yj0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3231 ... yj0.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
Let me know what you think. I'll try to answer any Q's you have about Buddy L.
Thanks, Kevin.

that looks sharp. I'd love to modify one of those locos into a german br52, give it a nice camo paint job, custom up a flak car....ooohoohoooh (homer simpson donut shudder).

Very nice. Please don't say your going to repaint those :( ya' just hate seeing the old trains redone, especially since those seem like they are in very good condition. Also like the track base.

Thanks everyone.
The track was made by the former owner. They sold me 3 pieces all together. No curved piece though.
I have no plan on painting the loco. 8)

One thing to look into is whether the US supplied France with Pacifics in WWI (4-6-2s). Many of the steam engines the US sent to support France in WWI were still running on French lines when the Allies invaded Europe. That way you can run the trains to haul both Axis and Allied hardware.

I didn't know that. That's something I'll check into. Thanks. Kevin.

I took a few more pics. I think the Panther is a little too big.
<a href="http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000447zh6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/5896 ... zh6.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
And a little too wide.
<a href="http://img478.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000448wf7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img478.imageshack.us/img478/9841 ... wf7.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
I guess either the Hanomag or Pak-40 will work. 8)

You might try pointing it's main-gun to the rear ,.. opposite the tender ,.. or try using the main-gun transport "lock-down" mechanism ,.. next time Kevin. + = 8)

Kevrut, have you ever thought of building a custom bed/platform(wider/longer) that would attatch to the Buddy L rail car frame? That would allow you to transport larger vehicles without them looking like they're about to tumble off.

I just thought the tank looked too big either way I faced it.

To flpickupman:
I had seen two sets of "wheel trucks" on E-Bay. I was going to use them to make a low-boy flatcar for a larger load or a custom Pullman passenger car. Someone must of parted out a railcar and just put the axles up for bid. They sold for more than I thought they were worth. I'm always looking though. 8)

No doubt. I'd like to come across something like that too. I apologize if you've mentioned this already, but is the track a proprietary gauge?

The track base was carved out of one piece of wood. The r/r ties are part of it. They bought the rails and nailed it down to match the Buddy L gauge. Each piece of track is 68" long.
You can get the 4' Buddy L metal track sections on E-Bay too. There's always some for sale on E-Bay every month. I pick up an extra loose car coupler once in a while too. You never know, you might bid on a car that doesn't have any couplers. 80 year old toys loose pieces now and then.
Kevin.

Kevrut, can you measure the gap between the rails? I've seen some state Buddy L is 3.5" between rails, but now have seen some claim it is 3.25". If its 3.25", that's practically dead nuts on for 1/18 standard gauge (just a scale 2" oversized - close enough)

The track is 3.25" between the rails. The space between the wheel flanges on the flatcar is 3.125". (3 1/8") :P

I'm just about finished with my Train Station and loading platform. I thought I'd post pics of them in progress.
This first one is the frame work of the platform. It's 24" long.
<a href="http://img245.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000457hr8.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/3433 ... hr8.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
The deck glued on.
<a href="http://img95.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000458lr3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/8745/1000458lr3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
The Station house. I use foamboard.
<a href="http://img180.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000459cl2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/721/ ... cl2.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
Both together.
<a href="http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000460nr8.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/2010/1000460nr8.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
Painted platform and roof.
<a href="http://img292.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000471qz7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/3157 ... qz7.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
Another angle.
<a href="http://img143.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000473rd9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/3117 ... rd9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
Top view of Station. Not alot of room inside. This is a small town station.
<a href="http://img180.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000477tt9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/3417 ... tt9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
A view inside the door. Waiting room with ticket window.
<a href="http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000479qy3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6259 ... qy3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
View of the office. Just enough room for the stove and desk.
<a href="http://img135.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000480xg7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/6416 ... xg7.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
<a href="http://img329.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000482hr9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/6663 ... hr9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
These are some extras I made. Handtruck, rolltop desk, and bench.
<a href="http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000483au3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/6798/1000483au3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
Thanks, Kevin.
