thank you for your comments,,, I am still not happy with my photos,, I can't seem to get the close-up detail I want with my digital camara. I am experimenting with different light. It was cloudy when I took these, I will try some more in direct sunlight.

Those pics look pretty good to me. The lighting wasn't bad at all.

I love how the sand "wall" of your steps makes it look like those boys are patrolling the streets of downtown Baghdad.
You might try the macro setting on your camera if it has one.
