Matching paint, anyone tried this?

Post by flpickupman » Wed Apr 12, 2006 5:08 am

As I prepared to customize my P-47 I realized that my biggest obstacle would be matching the existing paint. Then I had what I hope will be an epiphany. Has anyone taken, say a wing, to a hardware store such as home depot and asked them to place the part in their optical scanner to get a paint match? I know they carry acrylic paint, and it seems on the surface that it should work. Am I off my nut here or might this actually work?

The idea sounds good but if your talking about acrylic house paint you my have to thin it down big time... give it a shot.

Just add water right?

Maybe I'll get the time this weekend.

Attempting to get a paint match like that is a great idea. Too bad model shops don't have the means to get that technical... I know with Testor Model kits, they give you the exact FS Federal Standard Color codes. It would be cool if specs like that could be had for toys.

Been busy lately between work, school and g/f. I hope to make it to a paint matching machine by this Friday afternoon. I'll keep you folks updated on how feasible it is.
