Small Scale Military Headquarters

I would like to learn how to get a nice natural metal finish on a model plane. I have an 1/18th scale P-51 that I removed all the paint off of. I love the look of Mustangs with the shiny natural metal finish. Does anyone know how to duplicate this on a model? Thanks

Done this a couple of times on scale model in the past. There are several methods. One involves covering the entire model with aluminum foil and polishing sections to resemble different panels. That's the toughest to get right...not recommended for the beginner. Another method is a paint called Alclad and this is a primer for how to do it http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/nmfcb_1.htm. Personally I prefer Tester's Metalizer paints with SNJ. The paint goes on flat and delicate. I use Post-It notes (low tac glue) to mask a panel. Then you polish the panel with the SNJ until you get the right "look" you want. Once the entire model is finished, a coat of clear flat (or gloss depending on what you want the surface to look like) and VIOLA!...metalized surfaces. I suggest practising before you go for the real deal. I also suggest investing in white terry-cloth gloves....your fingers will take the metalizer paint off just by touch before you can seal if if you handle the model too much. Have fun with it dude!

I have used Alclad to get a nice metal finish on my models. I even used it on a custom 1:18 P-47. It isn't too difficult to do, but you do need an airbrush. I use Tamiya spray can TS-14 gloss black as a base and then use my airbrush to spray on the alclad. I prefer alclad because you don't have to seal it and decals stick to it very well. I have used the Testors metalizer before with mixed results and I prefer the Alclad. Hope this helps.

Alcad is by far the best natural metal finish line, but as mentioned, you'll need to have an airbrush. Mettalizer rattle can and/or jars (airbrush) are pretty good as well, but regardless of which you choose, be sure to use sealer and/or a coat of future.
