W.I.P. Winter Tiger

In the cold winter months I tend to turn from aircraft to ground pounder stuff. Had a spare gray 1/18 21st c. Tiger so I decided to try a winter scheme mod. My first attempt was on another vehicle and didn't turn out too well. This is my second attempt at a winter snow scheme. Looked at many photos and there are endless examples of field applied winter camo from nearly solid white to mottled to what looks like it was splashed on with a mop. The fun part is there is no right or wrong with it. Just has to look possible. Still a work in progress and I have to apply some numerals and add a crew. All 21st C. Tigers have the same 326 and 5 kill rings regardless of the repaint so I used 000 steel wool to buff off the numbers and 2 of the kill rings on the barrel. I actually used a water based craft paint in the color "vanilla" which is more an off white. It tones down the bright white I used on the unsatisfactory first try a great deal. I applied it with a paper towel sheet folded into a small pad instead of a brush and dabbed and streaked where practical. Used a Q-tip to get to tighter areas. My finger tip proved a good dabbing media to thin out any heavy spots. Dirtied it up a bit as mud was likely to get tracked on the upper surfaces and splashed on the road wheels and such. It's an open canvas so it's hard to say what's too much or not enough. Was fun to create.

Axis thats outstanding, it looks very believable. Are you going to add a "winter " crew to it?
I'll add its much better than 21st's Winter Tiger I offering.

Great work, Axis :D
That looks so much more realistic than the 21st Winter Tiger!

After some frustrating and aggravating issues with my big 1/6 project working with uncooperative---no make that combative... tiny buckles, snaps and buttons on some of the figures resulting in broken straps and lost buttons, I decided to take a break and work on something else for a while. Still tinkering with winter schemes. Took the really bad winter Tiger and reworked the snow camo. This is the metal version. I was pleased with the results and now I'm re-doing the original project from this post to look more like this. I'm considering doing the same with the winter Panther which I don't care for the paint scheme either.

Here's the redone original Tiger that started out in panzer gray. Added a number to the rear turret. Decided to not redo the Panther altogether. Just dirtied up from the road wheels down. The out of the box example had too much white and bright yellow tan down low where the weathering spray didn't cover and the tracks were too clean. Like the Tigers, I added some light rust to the black spare tracks pieces. Just need to add an antenna. Weather here is cold or raining or both so I'm working on two winter Shermans next. One is the metal "winter" example and the other is a spare dark green. I have a BBi "58" I might touch up too. It's been a nice change of pace from the 1/6 project.

I was never a fan of winter camo schemes but you have done a good job on all of yours !
