Vacu-Form canopy help

Looking for some ideas on installing my 1st vac-form canopy. I'm putting a squadron birdcage canopy on an OTAKI/ARII F4U Corsair. I see people suggesting blue tack to fill in the canopy to help with cutting. The instructions say to use decal film instead of painting it, seems odd?
