is it more or less expensive to cast and paint a figure than to buy and repaint a figure? Also is it worth the work and risk?

More.

You will pay probably $20-$40 for the resin and RTV.Then you need to assemble and paint.

You also need a master/original figure in order to cast.

It will take a day or two in order to make your moulds then about a half a day to pour and clean up your copy . Then of course paint.

Pickelhaube knows his stuff!
If you were planning to make more than one figure (the same figure) it might be worth it.
But for one figure, the time as Pickel has mentioned is a big factor. What is it your working on?

Thanks, I was contemplating trying to cast a bunch of some 21st Century toys D-Day paras and then painting them correctly. I really want a Normandy-themed "Band Of Brothers" of figs.

What if you bought a few sets of these and painted them the way you want?

The price is not bad and it'd be a time saver.

yes, possibly. I have a few of those. But they don't have as much articulation and sturdiness as these newer ones:

or

I was hoping to buy a bunch of them, but can't really find them anywhere for a reasonable price.

I was also hoping to use Dragon M1 belts for the riflemen but I have a limited supply of those and I don't want to buy more dragon figs just for the belt.

I wanted around 10-20 figs (made with ones above as base) with different accessories (i.e. M1, M1 carbine Dragon belts). do you think it would be worth the money, labor, and risk to cast the figs and accessories?

What scale? If it's 1/32, you could purchase Conte paras (plastic) and paint them. They're airborne. They take paint well.
