Small Scale Military Headquarters

I've been wanting to find out what Tamiya mixes I should use for RLM 70/71. I searched for ages on the web, only to find a handful of paint mixes. I put them all to the test on a single model. The model is of a HE111 that was abandoned. I just threw the remaining parts together and painted it. The decals were also old and flaky, don't mind them, I just threw them on for the color.

I found that the BEST looking mixes are in the two separate photos (Both are my mixes).
The RLM70/71 on the tail section is a dark one. It's a dark olive green and black green.




The next favorite is a lighter green, and black-green. I tried to replicate the box art for revels Ju88 in 1/32. To me, the box art colors felt bright and warm, like a summer day.




Here is a comparison shot of the whole plane. You can see all the mixes I tried together. My goal was to find mixes for Tamiya or Vallejo, both of which are easy to come by acrylics -- at least in the USA they are.

My next two favorites are the Vallejo colors, and the Tamiya mix on the inner, right wing (XF27/XF62:1+XF49:1).


The photos do not do the colors justice, I'll be sure to get some pics of them on a finished
aircraft!

RLM70/71 (70) XF27:1 or XF27:3 + XF1:1 -- (71) XF58:4 + XF62:1 + XF61:2
RLM70/71 (70) XF27:1 -- (71) XF62:1 + XF49:1
RLM70/71 (70) XF27:1 -- (71) XF61:8 + XF2:2

Thank you for these convincing tests. When you write XF27:3, does it mean 1/3 of the total mix, or 3/1?
Does somebody know how to make the best mix with Tamiya Colours to match with the BBI Blackhawk (1st OD green release) and the Kiowa Warrior?

It means 3 parts of this paint, to 1 part of this one.
Basically, 3 drops of this one and 1 drop of that one. Or 6 drops of this one, 2 drops of this one.

Not sure on the chopper though.

Yes, this type of post is really helpful when trying to figure out what colors to use or who/where to buy paints from!

Thanks for the info although your formulas are a bit confusing.

I Googled who makes the best RLM colors of paint and model Masters enamel came up time and again.

I think it was TKO who used model masters and had a catastrophe with them. I think he tried to mask the the MM paint . he pulled the tape and the paint stripped down to bare plastic. But the colors were spot on.

Almost everybody is now switching to Acrylics. Tamiya being the post popular.

Yes, It puzzled me for a while! Tamiya paints are easy for me to find. I can never find Gunze/MrHobby, Lifecolor, xtracrylics (Or what ever they're called), ect...

The mix in the second pic is the best I think.

I was going for this when I thought up the camo mix.



In the first pic I was going for this.
The XF61 will need to be lightened a bit, but I think It looks good!

Yea, I can find good RLM colors in enamels, just not readily available acrylics.

How are my mixes confusing? Just to try to keep things simple for others, so if it's confusing I'll fix it.
