British SAS Desert Patrol Jeep 1/18

Post by thehun » Tue Jun 14, 2011 5:36 am

Hey Guys,
This is a custom i have been working on for the past couple of months off and on, I'm getting better at remembering to take photos of the build as i go so bare with me
Image

A couple of years ago i picked up a busted up Solido die-cast jeep similar to this one, S its what i started with

Image
Image
Image

After stripping it down, and finding the color i wanted to use, I cut away the grill and added the water cooling system
Image
Image

When i started on the inside, I had to remove the seats and customize them to where i could move them back as far as possible, I wanted to be sure that later on i could add custom figures, I also had to re position the steering wheel so it would be easy to get figures in and out, then i replace the rear deck and raise it up a little, After that i had to make 3 different gun mounts, one for a 50 Cal, one for a single Vickers, and one for the twin vickers.......on to the fun part....Detailing......

Image
Image
Image

I did remove, customize and repaint the motor, Even tho there was no reason for it because once i add all the stowage you will not be able to raise the hood, Adding the detail and paint chips is a real pain, and time consuming, paint chips in 1/18 scale are really small on to part “ 2 “

Image
Image
Image

Now with the detail inside and out and tires done, the jeep starts to come to life a little, I also added a compass on the dash
Image
I custom made, and cast 90% of the stowage items, Some of these items do not exist in 1/18 scale.....On to part “ 3 “

Once everything is added on, with more detailing, the end results are amazing, A $7.00 ebay junk jeep is now a one of a kind custom show piece, even tho after studying these photos i see some things that will have to be addressed to bring it into a Realistic mode, enjoy the photos below

Nice! 8) It's realistic looking, and dang the Brits armed it to the teeth, with enough gas and supplies to go anywhere!

Wow, great looking jeep. Looks even better than the Solido SAS Jeep!
It's funny, because some time ago, I took a Solido SAS Jeep, stripped it and painted it to look like a battle worn ETO jeep. Never did complete it all the way, but now I am thinking of going back and finishing it and addressing the details on one of the Solido SAS Jeeps!

Very nice job! I'd like to see it with your custom figures when you complete them too!

That is amazing well done. How did you achieve the dotted dirt effect. I put a link to the specific picture here:

Miggles...I use a large sewing needle that i have adapted to use with my dremel tool, so all i have to do is touch it to my model and it knocks a little speck of paint one at a time, It takes a while but you can see the results.

Thank you for the info. I've been looking to add something to my weathering outside of mud.

Everyone has there own "Style" of painting. Yours is very unique and I really like it! It's hard to place my finger on your paint jobs but they are really good!!!

Everett " The Hun " has hit a home run here, the detail is amazing, of course I'm going to try and make one, first off I know it will not be as good, but with alittle help ( parts wise from Everett ) maybe it won't be too bad, not trying to copy, I realize my talents don't go that far, again its the creator of these customs that get the rest of us to try and make something.

I'm having a pretty good time with it, I'll post pics if anyone cares to see.

Jim please post your pictures. I also have a Solido SAS jeep and haven't been motivated to do something with it. I have a couple of "Sahara" movie figures to use for the heads but haven't found any bodies to use yet for the figures.

Well, I started on this, but I'm not satisfied with the overall color, I didn't want to use a DAK color, but what I found ended up too light, I think I'll try again, but let me know what you think.

The flash makes it look almost white

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I still haven't found a color I like yet, of course I don't own a airbrush, so everything I find comes out of a rattle can.

I keep looking at Everett's and thinking there is no way I can even get close to that, but maybe I'll get it close enough to please me.

Again, I didn't mean to hi-jack Everett's thread and hopefully he'll post some more pictures of his SAS ( wonder if I can edit them and make it look like I did them )
