Small Scale Military Headquarters

found these websites. i have my f4u in a box still. can anyone determine the diameter of the 3 bladed prop? i'm leaning towards the 4 bladed variant.

That Hobby Lobby site looks promising. Although I would think that even the smaller one is too large.

You should be able to wikipedia the dimensions that the 4 bladed prop was.

If, and when, you get a lead on where to get a proper 1/18 scale 4 bladed prop, be sure to let us know, and post pics.

thanks Snake. will do. i guess i'll break out my corsair prop and measure the circumfrence, then do some other math-y stuff on the proportions, then find an arteest in plastic. i think pickelhaube is already task saturated.

i did some online/internet research last night. as far as i can determine, the diameter of both the 3 and 4 bladed props is 13' 2". for some reason, i went itno the research expecting a noteable difference, but at this point, there is no difference. think i'll make some calls and get some birddogs on this. i did some math and came up with a 8.7 inch diameter in 1/18 scale. i still need to verify this with my own corsair model.

My JSI Corsair has a blade length of 4 3/8" from the center hub to the tip. So that would be 8 3/4" in diameter to match the 1/18 scale 3 blade. One could most likely get away with using the 9 1/2" diameter prop and most likely no one would know the difference.

By the way the 1/8 P-47 has 4 1/4" blades - 8 1/2" diameter.

i thought about that. but was unsure if they were the same propeller assmemblies in reallife. i am leaning towards getting the smaller diameter static prop. thanks for making the measurements.

Looking at the Hobby Lobby 9 1/2" makes me think that it's going to be the paddle style like the 1/18 P-47 Bubble Tops have. But, maybe its just the picture. To me, unfortunately, the larger diameter proper seems to have the more correct uniform blade width. But it may be worth dropping a few dollars to see. They are nice looking. and a very tempting idea.

I think that you would notice the 3/4 inch difference .

The blades are screw on , I thnk that it would not take too much work to shave them down to be the correct size.

You could shave off the stub that goes into the hub and save a little off the tip and repaint it yellow.

Or you couldbuy the 4 bladed prop for the hub. Cut off the blades of your Corsair cast another blade and insert them in the store bought hub. Of course you would have to paint the 4th blade and try to emulate the prop decal.

I think shaving is the way to go.

After you are done, this would be a "one of " that almost nobody else would have.

pic- thanks for the suggestions and thoughts. after looking again at the prop hub, i had a similar thought. take the original blades, sever them at the base. (i'd need another 3 bladed prop for this to work though). mount the new blades in thier hub. sever them at the base. mount the original blades into the hobbylobby stubs. that way i have the original blades for the look and scale, yet the benefits of the new hub and mountings.

will you be able to replicate the entire prop/hub assembly? i have heard back from all mfg.s and they have no spares ( so they claim). i am thinking that i can cleave the blades from the hub and mount them in the hobby-lobby hub. i have no problem with painting the blades. i think that if you can mould the blades, then this would be possible. thoughts?

I think so I have done my P-36 prop and my Stuka replacement prop so I figure I can do yours.

It could be a bit pricey though because that will use a lot of RTV.

It will probably cost about $30-$40 worth of resin and RTV to do.

30-40 bucks? wow. i know you do good quality work, but i was planning on converting 2 bbi corsairs. hm. let me ponder it. thanks for sharing your thoughts.

That is the materialcost for the first one. The second one would cost about $10
