i'm thinking of making a section of carrier deck to put some corsairs and an avenger on. I would set it up temporarily, on my bed. Was thinking of making it around 9 feet long by 5 feet wide and sections of foamcore that could be stored away easily in a closet would be perfect for making it.

normandy- I saw that website, but you can only buy in mass. I only want 1 or 2 sheets. Even for products like this- http://www.foamcoreheaven.com/48x96x3blulb.html
which would work for me, I would have to buy 3. Matter of fact, I have yet to see it online not in mass. When I bought some 24x36 sheets a year or two back at Michael's, I could buy however many I want.

Well, if it is just to make some pics, I've choosed very large, thick, hollow (like bee-nest) cardboard panels that are used as insulating materiel for houses, but also for theater sceneries. 2 times 6 x 3 feet, very cheap. Cardboard is light, rigid, easy to cut, to spray, and yellow tape for the lines and to cover the gap between the 2 sections of the flightdeck is also cheap and easy to find. Then, 4 thin wood beams (cardboard is light), and 2 trestles. Everything housed vertically in my garage, no place needed... Just ake care about humidity, that could curve the panel.
But my 1:18 F/A-18 is not ready now, also missing the flightdeck crew (I'm working on) and an aircraft carrier vehicle (has somebody heard of a JSI project? or other idea?). So I can't show any picture now.

Well I went to Michael's today. I got a 40 x 60 sheet from the people doing framing, so I can work with it. They cut it down to 40 x 48 so it would fit in the car! Another inch and it wouldn't have. I can glue a 8" by 48" piece on if I want. It should make a nice carrier deck...

hm, that's pretty interesting. I was wanting to find some black foamcore myself. Is the foam itself black too or just the paper covering the foam? How thick is it? You don't happen to know if they had a dark blue foam core do you? I was going to make some WWII carrier deck.

My only concern about using foamcore is the weight of the planes sitting on it might dent it where the wheels make contact. I was wondering if there was anything stiffer.

The foam is about the same color as the paper, dark grey to black. It is 3/16" thick. They had white and black foamcore :| (In that size anyway) It feels pretty sturdy, but I would go with granch's idea for maximum stability. I am going to have my carrier deck on a desk, so I am likely just going to put the foamboard directly on that.

it's more the top i was thinking of. The weight from the planes on the wheels may cause the wheels to dent the foramboard from the top.
