How Do You Paint...?

I am currently working on finishing up my Pegasus Bell X-1 kit. One of the last things I have to do is paint the black canopy framing. The canopy comes as a clear plastic piece and the framing consists of raised ridges on the plastic.
On nearly all models I've built in the past, I've hand-painted the canopy framing with a small detail brush. If I was careful, this worked well, but there were always inconsistences. Most of those models I built were small (1:48 scale and under) so the the inconsistences on the canopy did not show up well. However, on a 1:18th scale canopy, that will be different...
So, my question is:
What would be the best way to go about painting the canopy framing on a 1:18 scale X-1-style canopy?
Thanks for the help
