i've used various types of cotton as well. Looks pretty good, textury but if you get a few feet away it's not very noticable.

I've tried using real smoke before but it doesn't look very scale, plus it keeps setting off the smoke detector.

The only bad thing with cotton balls is that its not big enough. Maybe Im being dumb and should glue them together first???

time for an old bull, young bull talk:

You can buy bags of cotton at craft stores that are the size of green garbage bags. Cheap too.

The stuff they sell during Halloween to make fake cobwebs will also works. If you have a laser printer, just clean the inside of it with it. or if you have access to toner, just mix some in.

My won a rocket competition in the scouts and I suspended the rocket on his ceiling and made a smoke trail with it.

i use smoke (cotton) and flames alot. For flames i usually use yellow plastic bags, flat not shiney if you can find them, cut chunks out of them, crumple them up a bit and paint on flicks of orange and red then envelope my smoke around it. Looks pretty good and dirt cheap. When light shines through from behind it even looks like it's fire
