ships ahoy!

i have this idea to build portions of big ships in 1/18. I'd just do the deck, leaving out the hull...adding as much structure to the deck as i could/had room for. The deck could be built in thin sections, which could be packed away fairly compactly, after 'play time' was over. Leaving out the hull saves a lot of complexity of building and a lot of storage space.

I'm trying to decide what material to build the decks out of. I thought of foam board first, but i'm not sure how easy it would be to cut in a graceful curve, like the plan view of a ship's deck.

suggestions?

Are you talking about building a carrier or battleship?

cruiser, battleship....just some of the deck and a bit of superstructure or a turret or something. It's how to cut the foam board in a gentle curve without crushing the edge where i'm cutting, that concerns me. I'd need a template, probably made of cardboard but i'm afraid that as i cut, the pressure from the knife will crush the edge of the foam board.
