My Next Project...Eventually

You know it's pretty bad when you go camping with the wife up in the nice mountain air to take a break from life, and all you can seem to think about is the next custom project you're going to do when you get home :P

Well lately, with all the insanity of trying to close on a house (a short sale, not recommended), then backing out last minute due to some unexpected liens against the property ($22,000 worth  ), and now trying again on another property, we needed to go on a little vacation and take a breather. The only problem was, that before we left this past Saturday, I received my shipment from the flying mule containing FOV's new stug, KV-1, and porsche king tiger. Of these 3 it was the KV-1 that got me brainstorming. If you haven't bough this tank I really recommend it, it is a great tank, and a new one to 1/32 to boot. Another thing, it's HUGE. I mean it makes a Tiger I look small, and is on par with the King Tiger (except for the gun obviously). And that's where this next custom idea all began. I kept thinking to myself, well, if this is how big a KV-1 is, how big was a JS-2? And that's where my mind was when I left for the woods for the weekend, to be alone with the wife and my thoughts of large soviet armor. Now I admittedly am not an expert on soviet armor. I'll know what you're talking about if you say KV-85, T-34/85, T-_ _, but I won;t be able to tell you their specifications, attributes, just the basics. So needless to say I was clueless about specific dimensions. So after pondering all weekend i came back last night to get some answers to some of my questions. There's just one problem. Remember how I said we're trying to buy a house? Well, since we didn't end up closing when we were planning to, and ended up backing out anyway, we had decided to not renew the lease at our old apartment. So we had to move; but to where? Well if you guessed my in-laws you guessed right. So the reason that is a problem is because all our stuff, including my hobby essentials (books, tools, tanks etc) are all in a big huge pile of boxes. So I had to count on the internet, not usually the preferred method. After several hours spent on the computer, I got the answers I needed. The question I answered was whether or not it is feasible to use one of those new FOV KV-1s to make a , wait for it.... JS-2!

After looking at sources online(Which I have yet to confirm their accuracy), the size difference between the two hulls are negligible at 1/32 (In 1:1 scale about 10 inches in length and width, which is nothing in 1/32). I know it is going to be a difficult task, but I think by committing myself on here to the project I'll be that more motivated to complete it to show you guys. I might even need some of your help :D

This project won't be on the fast-track to completion though. First I've got to get moved into this next house (Closing date is Sept 2nd as of now), then get all the renovations the wife wants done, then it will be Kevin time to work on the JS-2. So expect the first bits of this project to come trickling in around October or so.

10 inches divided by 32 is .3125.

about 5/16 of an inch.

Rivet counters will see this and their heads will spin around and spew vomit.

Be careful bunky

good point

Yeah, I've pondered that thought, and be it that I am one of those rivet counters, I wouldn't usually let something like this slide. But, considering that I have yet to come across a piece of armor by 21st or FOV that is precise in its measurements, I think this piece may actually fit in just fine. And saying that the KV-1 is actually the the bigger hull of the two tanks in length (which may actually equal the length of the JS-2 after I remove the upper hull and superstructure) and in width (which I think has something to do with the track guards), it will actually work out because everyone is expeccting the JS-2 to be a rather large tank anyway.

In any case I think the <1/3 inch isn't enough to keep me from giving this a shot. A project such as this one is just what I think I need to push my production skills to the next level, as it is going to require a lot of fabrication (Well beyond what I've done in the past). I've really been wanting to learn how to create my own molds so I could replicate my creations for others. I know there was some interest in my panzer III ausf. N and the parts I made for it, and if I had the expertise of someone such as you PH I think I would of made some 1/32 collectors finally happy with there 32X panzer IIIs. So as it stands now I'm going to try and go about this next custom in a way that will allow for others to enjoy the final product as well. I really wish I had someone nearby that could just teach me how to do it, rather than winging it off of some online tutorials and probably wasting time and money.
