I'm fed up with false promises of a 1/18 multi engined airplane, so I'm building my own-a 1/18 P-61. I plan to scratchbuild it in wooden sections, then mold them. If anybody knows of parts of current 1/18 planes I could use or a better method of building it please post it.

there is a chap mei p-61 you might be able to use parts from, like the dorsal turret or cockpit parts, like seat...etc

there is also this company's p-61, you could order from them or get parts i suspect:

Thanks! Any idea where I can purchase the Chap Mei plane?

The RIPmax will be far too big for parts and i fear the chap mei will be far too small. Chap mei stuff is VERY hard to find. Try Ebay UK or Germany but it will be tough to locate.

i'll have a look online and see if i find anywhere that has it, i know it was available in-store here for a while in some shops...ebay uk and also ebay uk stores might be a good bet. as for scale, the dorsal turret, for example, is oversized, so it actually looks like it might be 1/18 scale, whereas the main body of the plane is not.

Here is another option for you. These are card models that many r/c guys blow up to scratch build their own planes. I have a P-39 card model that I am currently using for my scratch build. They include all the templates needed to make the aircraft. I am including two web pages. the first is an ebay auction, but the price is a bit high. The reason I am including this page is to show you everything you get with the kit. All you need to do is enlarge the pages to the scale you want, and then decide how to attack your project. The second is a site where you can order the P-61 from. Keep in mind that there are other sites that sell these models so search around a bit. Good luck, and keep us informed of your progress.

here is a cheaper one:

It's olive drab instead of black but that makes no difference since you'll be using it for templates.

Thanks for the help, but I already have a set of enlarged blueprints/templates. I'm more interested in parts such as props and wheels from current 1/18 planes that would be useable. Would the P-47 prop work?

I don't think so but if the B-25 ever comes out I think that you can use those. :?

Even if the B-25 did come out, those props wouldn't work either. The P-61 had a four bladed prop and the B-25 used a three bladed prop, like I said before, the P-47's is
the closest I've found, but it may not work either. I have started wing
construction and will post pics when it is done. Does anyone know of a plastic engine that could be used for my P-61?

I was actualy joking about the B-25. The P-61 used the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 double wasp engine . The engine that was used in the P-47 Corsair, Hellcat and others. BBI makes one for their Hellcat . This is the same engine that I used in my P-36. But I customized it into a P and W 1830 twin wasp. In order to make my custom I filed off the magnetos and took off the ignition collect ring. It looks about the same though.

Thanks pickelhaube! That will really help. Also, when you mentioned the B-25 I thought you were implying that I could use the props from an R/C B-25 that's close to 1/18. Sorry for the misinterpration.

Work on the main wing is progressing slowly. I'll post pics when I get back from vacation.
