Help with scale

Post by Airacobra » Thu Jan 17, 2008 12:32 am

I am in the process of planing a 1:18 scale P-39 Build and I have a question about scaling up some plans. I currently have a 1:33 scale paper model and want to enlarge the plans to 1:18 scale. How much larger do I need to make the plans? I have an idea but I'm almost to embarrassed to post it because it may be way off. I used to have a tool on my PC to figure this out but I can no longer find it. Is 54% close?

Download ScaleMaster from here: http://www.starshipmodeler.com/tech/scalemaster.htm

Very handy scale calculator! I use it all the time and download it/put it on the desktop off all computers I use.

Thanks for the replies. I went the opposite way and divided 18 by 33 trying to get the difference, whoops. Thanks for the scale calculator, that may actually be the one I had on my old PC. I will post some updated pictures of my build under a new thread as soon as I get the pieces cut and ready to assemble.

This is how I do my scaling. Having a Kinkos nearby realy helps out. The first thing is to find out how big the full scale plane is. If you can convert this to inches or mm that would be the way to go.
Say the plane has a wing span of 39' 5".
So 39x 12 = 468 + 5 that works out to 473 inches
so 473 divided by 18 = 26.27 that is about 26 1/4 or 26 and about 5/16 inches.
Do this to the stab. Go to the regular black and white photo copier (it is a lot cheaper) and bump it up till you get the % of what you need to make it. Then take it to the gal and say I want you to enlarge this to blah blah percent.
Hope this helps
