I just finished my latest project. It's a coaling tower. It is 36" tall. More pics of project from start to finish.
This first one is just the basic framework.
<a href="http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000485yg0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/4301 ... yg0.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
I used 100's of sticks in the building of this thing.

Kev, you have clearly mastered the art of stick building.. If I ever have need of a small scale carpenter, you're on the short list.. ;)

Well done! :D

Thanks guys. :P
Just some info on the coal tower.
I used...
3' of 7/16" square wood dowel.
30' of 3/8" square wood dowel.
70' of 1/4" square wood dowel.
8' of 1/8" round wood dowel.
And about 986 "Skinny Sticks".
5 FL. OZ. of Elmer's wood glue.
 :P

XD-CRANE

Post by kevrut » Sun Dec 31, 2006 9:22 pm

This is another Rail Road custom. I took a Nylint Michigan Crane and transferred the crane from the truck chasis to a tower I made.
What I started with.
<a href="http://img463.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000519ps2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/4368 ... ps2.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
The tower is just over 21" tall to the top of the hand rail and 8" wide.
<a href="http://img301.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000520cg5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/1956 ... cg5.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
I painted everything black and red.
<a href="http://img107.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000521na4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/2994 ... na4.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
Here's a couple shots of them loading a Sherman on a flatcar.
<a href="http://img233.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000523lc8.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/2337 ... lc8.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
I put alot of weight in the rear of the crane for a counterweight.
<a href="http://img233.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000524br7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/3520 ... br7.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
This is my reference pic. It's of an HO scale crane.
<a href="http://img292.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ho0282fl1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/4889 ... fl1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a>
Thanks and Happy New Year.
Kevin.

Same here, not sure how I missed the crane. Totally off the hook Kev!! :D

Is the vehicle you took the crane from vintage or something you can order somewhere?

Thanks everyone! :P

grunt1,
The crane was built by Nylint in the 60's. You can get them on E-Bay anytime. It's the T-24 Clark Michigan Crane. I have another one with a clamshell instead of a wrecking ball or hook.

I noticed the Stuka later on, I wondered if anyone would notice it too. :P

This is a pic of a Troop car. Many boxcars were converted to Troop cars when the war got started.
<a href="http://img239.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... giaui0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/3156 ... ui0.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
This is the two flatcars I started with. I converted them to a Troop Sleeper and Coach. Each car is 22" long.
<a href="http://img179.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010040gs3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/2944 ... gs3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
I made the Sleeper and Coach cars out of cardboard.
<a href="http://img166.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010003ae1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/2374 ... ae1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
This is both cars ready for painting.

These are the bunks for the sleeper car.
<a href="http://img152.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010042sm2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/6038 ... sm2.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
This is the Sleeper car.
<a href="http://img248.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010043xn4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/483/ ... xn4.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
Inside view of Sleeper car. It sleeps 18 figures.
<a href="http://img72.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010044ts2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5108/1010044ts2.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
These are the cardboard benches.
<a href="http://img151.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010031tq3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/7060 ... tq3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
This is the Coach car.

Top view of coach. I was going to leave them as wooden benches.
<a href="http://img151.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010034yq9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/3301 ... yq9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
I found this pic and tried to copy it.
<a href="http://img213.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mvc665xoc9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/3875 ... oc9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>
This is the finished interior. I used red felt for the seat covers.
<a href="http://img72.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010046xr1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/8486/1010046xr1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

Hooked up with Loco.
<a href="http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010049xo3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/3561 ... xo3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

WOW!
What a cool, detailed item that has been overlooked by BBI and 21st Century. Did you have any detailed drawings or pics of the sleeper car?
I don't know why 21st or BBI doesn't hook up with one of the major train MFGs and come out with a train station/rail yard that could be used with exsisting G scale stuff?

Thanks for the building pics and final end product pics.
Great job!

Thanks again.

I'll post a couple reference pics that I left out.

I found these for the sleeper car.

This first one is a restored sleeper car.

<a href="http://img96.imageshack.us/my.php?image ... re2yf3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/135/pu ... yf3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img63.imageshack.us/my.php?image ... pereb6.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/6751/1 ... eb6.th.gif" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

My Buddy L cars are only 22" long. That comes out to about 33' in 1:1 scale. I believe the diagram above is for a 50' to 60' sleeper car. I didn't have room for the sinks and toilet at each end.

Older Pullman car.

<a href="http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=149bx7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/8550/149bx7.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

Just posting some pics of a project I'm currently working on.
I've found a few pics online to get an idea of what I'm wanting to do.

<a href="http://img300.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nw152brz6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/8696 ... rz6.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... 85mgk9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/6757 ... gk9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

The shop is 30" long, 18" wide, and just over 18" tall. (So far.) I haven't decided what kind of roof to do yet.
<a href="http://img264.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010236kx1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/5232 ... kx1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img329.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010238mf6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/1435 ... mf6.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010242ja4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/5888 ... ja4.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

I have hung the doors on each end and put the floor in.
<a href="http://img156.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010273co1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8704 ... co1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

My shop also has an overhead crane. I may make two of them before I'm done. The loco weighs 26 lbs. by itself.
<a href="http://img329.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010275wx3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/4711 ... wx3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

The crane runs the whole length of the shop.
<a href="http://img156.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010278dl4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/9366 ... dl4.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

A close-up of the operator's basket.
<a href="http://img502.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010279kn6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/4273 ... kn6.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

That's all for now. This will take another month or so to finish. I will have windows in it just like in pic #1, and skylights on the roof.

Kevin.

Good to see you back at it kev.. Looks like a great project. Do you have plans for the brick wall texture? I posted some links a great while back to a site (I'll dig it up if it will help) that had sheets of various wall textures. Would seem to be a nice fit for the building based on the reference photos.

Still need to get my sandbag factory online so I can send you some defensive dugouts for the AA you've got to post around that yard. It's growing to become quite the critical wartime asset! ;)
