Helmet MArkings

Hey. I'm painting some Conte GIs and I'm wondering what I could put on their helmets in terms of rank markings, insignias, division markings, etc. I recently saw a movie and some of the COs had a white stripe running vertically down the back of ther helmets. Any body know what this line signifies and if you have any other ideas on what WWII helmets had on them please tell me! Thnx
