Pinewood Derby.

My two nephews are in the Boy Scouts and entered their cars in the Derby. I wasn't sure if this should go in "Off Topic" or "Customs". (It's a tank, so why not here.) I told them I'd post pics here for them.

Zach, (10 yrs old.) built this first one. He came over and checked out one of my Sherman tanks to get an idea how to make a tank. I gave him the two crew members and machine gun from a 1/32 Walker tank. He got "Best of Show" over all. It took 3rd in the actual race.

Noah, (8yrs old.) built this one. His took 3rd place too.

I never did this when I was a kid. Has anyone here ever entered one of these?

I did this when I was in scouts.
I finished 3rd place with my car.

I helped out in scouts a few years back when my Nephew was in them.
He was into trains at that time and wanted a pinederby train car. So, we made his like an BULLET train. With all the wood I had to carve off to make it look train-like, it didn't have enough weight to go really fast.
But he did get an award for best in show...

I used to love the Pinewood derby races as a Cub Scout (never did them when I was older and a Boy Scout...) What was really fun, however, was a science-projects class I had way back when I was a 7th grader. We made rocket-powered Pinewood Derby cars

The cars were run along a lengthy guide wire stretched for about 300 ft along an access road that once ran alongside the school. The modifications to the car were easy: simply drill a hole in the rear using a circular saw, drill a smaller hole in the roof of the engine chamber (to vent the pressure when the second charge fires so that the car doesn't split), and mount small eyehooks underneath the car to hold it to the guide wire. It was really fun watching the cars accelerate from 0-120 mph in just a few seconds

Those were the days, however. I don't think they even let you fly rockets on public schoolgrounds anymore - at least in California

When i was in the scouts, mine was a simple design, i finished 3rd but i would have won if i had gotten my selected lane, heres a simple drawing from ms paint i did of my design- http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d191/ ... ewoord.jpg

they had to drill some wholes in it cause it was to heavy but it ended up being just below the weight limit, won best of show though

Anybody gives me a pinewood derby car and tell me to make it stand out and win first place. Well I strap a bunch of big bottle rockets to it and there you go

It's that time of year again.

My nephews made a couple more derby cars.

Noah made a chuckwagon and took "Best of Class".

Zach made a "Remote Control" car and took 2nd in his den.

My son did the pine wood derby for 3 years dad helped a little . We got best of show all three years . We also got 2 4th places and one 3rd place in the race. We did the wheel axel potishing the whole nine yards. The cars that did win were uncarved blocks the only thing that was done to them is that they were hollowed out to make the wight restriction . No polishing no nothing and they won . Go figure.
