camouflage on a M5

Post by kimtheredxd » Wed Jun 07, 2006 7:28 pm

I saw a picture with a black and olive drab camouflage on a Sherman tank.Does any one know if this was also used on M5's? and if so have or know where a pic or two is of it(any black and o.d camo is OK also)Plus any pointers on painting said camo pattern on a 1/6th M5 tank using spray can paint. Thanks for any help. Kim

M5A1 camouflage...

re: the black and OD camoflage scheme. It turns out that this was more widely used than was reported many years ago. The US First Army sent out orders for all tactical vehicles to get black over OD patternpainting in late July 1944. This order was also sent out by the Twelth Army Group, but the Third Army doesn't seem to have practiced it as much as First and Ninth Armies. The painting was done by Engineer Camouflage Battalions instead of the German practice of having a unit do their own painting.

So, yes, the M5A1 would be correct in black/OD camoflage paint. Don't forget that they also painted over the side stars (they left the top one(s) for air ID.
