my latest zany idea: exploding russian anti tank dog
i've mentioned a few of my little 'special effect' customs in the past. My shooting panzerfaust, 1/18 scale landmine that explodes, german soldier who throws a stick grenade..
Well, my latest idea is an exploding Russian anti tank dog. For those who don't know what that is, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-tank_dog They weren't very effective but they were used and did destroy and damage many german tanks.
I was in Hallmark today and noticed a recordable birthday card and the idea sprung to mind. The card can have a 10 second message recorded on a small device inside. When the card is opened, the message plays, eg 'happy birthday daddy' from his little girl etc.
So my idea is to use a modified GI Joe shepherd (has to be reworked into almost a lying position and put a little backpack on it with a stick, sticking up, just like the dogs had.
Then, take the recording device out of the birthday card, record the sound of an explosion on it and glue it under a 1/18 german tank, with the end that activates the sound hanging down.
Now i can either push my little dog under the german tank, or have the tank drive over top of the dog, either way the dog will push against the little end of the device that is hanging down under the tank, that activate the sound. Once it pushes it far enough the explosion sound will play. Boom! It's pretty loud.
And that's it, simple and simply fun.
Note: no animals were hurt in the making of this toy.

You should make it so the dog blows apart too!
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Let me hear your guns!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: My what?
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Your guns! Ack, ack, ack, ack, ack!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: [fires his airplane's guns] AHHHH!

wow check out this video. Looks like a combination of colourized footage and post war russian movie footage. Really cool...except for the invisible german tank the dog blows up.

PETA would not like this tactic.
I love the five second clip of the one who looks like Benji, very happy waiting for a tank, little does he know....

apparently it's been used since. The Iranians tried it in the Iran Iraq war without success and the Iraqi insurgents tried it in 2005, without success.
The Russians were training dogs for this tactic up until 1995. I guess it seems like such a good idea but just never works right. Although many german tanks were disabled and destroyed during wwii by these dogs. But the cost in manpower, dogpower (they could be used for better things) and 'friendly fire' tank losses (the dogs had a tendancy to run under more familiar smelling russian tanks) made the tactic of little value. And it was of no use once the russians went over to the offensive shortly after Kursk.
Creative idea nontheless.

Were is my kitty cat ?
Come here baby kitty.
Daddy will protect you from the mean people.
Cats could be used as jamming devices to counter those dogie threats.
