Do the swazis really go there?

Supposedly they were painted on after capture, no one knows for sure, I find it hard to believe that some GI found a swastika stencil and went to town. I emailed the Horton brothers and Ill let you know when I get an answer.

Could you imagine talking to the Horten brothers if they were still around about the 229 and other projects?
As far as the "swaizis" go.......they may have been painted by museum staff or others. Anyhow were dealing in the what-if, so I think you could put them on the tail if you wanted. I think they look cool in that location.

Im doing the swastikas, Ill probably try to use the JU-87 tail decals then airbrush the exhaust over them.

I need to check again to be sure....but according to the definative references for the 229 indicate that no bent crosses were painted on the aircraft. In the above web reference, there is a clear picture farther down of the glider test aircraft's tail....no swazie. The glider test aircraft would have been marked similar (national markings at least) to the current marking standards. The bent crosses on the Smithsonian example, they were definately painted on AFTER capture and immediately before display as a "war prize" with other advanced aircraft types.

The markings (and outter wing panels) were fitted for an after-the-war show in England including the bent crosses. Existing pictures of the V2 (which flew) and V1 (which was destroyed in a test flight killing the test pilot) show no swatica. The aft area where the swatica were painted is the metal exhaust ducting and the paint would have been quickly burned away by the exhaust plume. Three seperate resources (print) confirm this. Sorry guys, but to be accurate, leave the swastica off.

Would you guys want a single large swastica right in the middel of the tail or 2 smaller left and right side ?

The swastie on the original is just one sided . On the left hand side.

I no the original did not have it. Heck the original did not even have a paint job.

One of the Brothers were asked about this and the answer was that they used any paint that they had on hand.

Any way I will offer them.

I know it may not be accurate but I like the look of the Ho-229 at the Silver Hill / Garber facility with the swastikas on the left and right of the tail. Just looks cool.

Its something about the night fighter paint, the dark somber colors and the radar masts in the nose, its menacing... I really hope this version gets made, and Pickle I will sacrifice my 1/48 scale one if you need it for a guide.

In order to do the night fighter it would require doing the whole center section over.

The weapons offificer is sitting on the wheel well. So that will have to be changed the engine nacells will have to be spread out farther.

So to rework the whole thing may be a little prohibative.

Unless.

In reality the night fighter is totaly fictious. I do not think it was even put on paper. ( I am not sure ).

So I could omit the wheel well squeze the second seat in behind the pilot and put some antennas on it and BINGO . Nightfighter.

Let the nacells lay were they are.

From what I have read it was on paper, and was set to be built. I have never compared schematics, all I can do is compare models.

I say drop in the extra seat, extend the canopy and add radar- Done!
