looking for a wire mesh
looking for a wire mesh
can anyone think of where i can get wire mesh, with the square openings being about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch or so? Anything i can find is far too fine a mesh.
I'm trying to make some 1/18 POW camp fencing.

What sort of pattern are you looking for? I've found good stuff in Micheal's/Jo-Ann's/Hobby Lobby in the sculpting area. It's used as a form underneath materials like paper-mache. I think it's in both grid and diagonal grid patterns. Hope that helps.

I was looking for the 1/4 inch mesh myself but have not had any luck.
I am not sure how you guys get produce up there in the Great White North but down here oranges and stuff like that come in red bags with 1/4 inch holes . It is kind of stretchy and may be of some use to you.

Only thing I know of is the Build-a-rama perimeter fencing with concertina wire on top:

Re: looking for a wire mesh
They have what I believe is called rabbit fence wire with the square holes measuring 1/4 inch at most Home Depot's and Lowes.
I used to use it around my young trees so the cats don't scratch the heck out of them. It's kind of rigid and in rolls, but is easily cut with snips to size. Made of thin metal so it can be bent too.

Re: looking for a wire mesh
rabbit fencing, eh? Hm...that might just be the ticket. I want just a basic grid pattern.
The only thing i found so far is some old chap mei nets i have. They have the right look but are very floppy and there is no easy way to tension them between upright posts i've made. I need something stiff like wire.....the advantage of wire being no painting required...just a bit of weathering.
Thanks for the tip, i'll check it out.

Ok, here are some examples of the stuff I was talking about:

The Wireform brand is one that I have seen quite a bit of, and used only a bit of. I'm pretty sure it's availible in different sizes.

Re: looking for a wire mesh
Better yet, these people seem to offer the whole line of Wireform mesh, with a nice variety of sizes, and for that matter materials. Check it out:

Several of thiers make a really good chain-link fence look. Diamond mesh seems to be a place to start.

Re: looking for a wire mesh
i just found hardware cloth. It's basically wire mesh in a wide variety of patterns and sizes. It comes in a big roll. Should be readily available at most hardware, home and automotive stores.
Worth checking out and should be easy to find locally.
thanks for all the ideas, gang.
now i need to figure out how to make some custom POW's and find a barracks for them. Need a good german shepherd too. The only one i can find is the GI Joe one and it ain't so good.

You can sometimes find the stuff you want very cheaply in the gutter area of hardware stores too. It's used for gutter guard.

Re: looking for a wire mesh
it looks like hardware cloth is going to be ideal. A 1/2 mesh of 19 guage wire, i think should be just right. I phoned a local hardware store and they have it in stock and it can be bought by the square foot. I think i'm going to go with 2x 6 inches by 6 feet. (for inner and outer fences). I'm going to use dollar store wooden spoon handles for the posts. Cheap to buy and just the right thickness. Dowling is too perfect, the wooden spoon handles have slight irregularities in them, making them look more like wooden posts.
