Upgrading FOV's B-26

Post by Epap » Sun Aug 22, 2010 5:19 am

FOV's first 1:72nd scale B-26, "Shootin-In", has received a lot of criticism due to paint and glue abberations, rubber pitot heads and machine guns, missing windows, OD oversprays on the bottom, incorrect colors on the fuselage letters--should be gray, not white---and their misplacement. The latter, was caused by a mistake at the factory ( I presume ) which saw an attempt to squeeze in the unit letters ( FW ) under the right horizontal stabilizer. To make these fit, the stars and bars were pushed forward on both sides. Actually the real B-26s positioned the unit and plane letters in the same places on both sides, instead of always showing the unit ID first, thereby eliminating the space problem.

Although I couldn't find decal letters in a dark enough gray, I used some in a lighter gray as an alternative to FOV's whites. Other changes included new pitot heads, many small windows painted in, the OD overspray eliminated and lots of weathering and chipping for a battle worn look. The first picture is of the FOV B-26 as it looked at the outset. The others show it now.Image[/img]ImageImage[/img]Image

Nice work. Would you recommend this and the B-25?

Unless you are willing to make some of the changes that I effected on this model, I'd recommend the second FOV B-26, which is an all-aluminum model. Its only major flaws are the rubber guns/pitot heads and some unpainted windows. As for the B-25, the sirst FOV bird has the same issues as the OD B-26, including a sloppy OD overspray on its undersides around the engines. The second B-25, Like its B-26 counterpart, is an all-aluminum one, which minimizes problems, so I'd go with that one first.

Though my FOV B-25s and B-26s didn't have them, other collectors have complained about QC issues----glue smears, defects in the paint, rubbed on dirt/grease, etc. so you take your chances with this line. I advise using a reputable online seller who will make good on such deficiencies.

While I am not into 1/72 scale, too small for me weak eyes, I have always been a fan of the B-26 . I like what you did with yours.
