captured Bf 109

Post by cardenas » Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:08 pm

Here is my first attempt at modeling. It is a 21st Century 1/32 scale plastic model kit of a Bf 109G, painted in the colors of a captured Bf 109 that was in the 325th FG. It was used as squadron "hack" flown by Lt. Co. Robert L. Baseler.

It is my first attempt at modeling so go easy. It is painted black with red spinner, ailerons, and rudder. It has the name "Hoimann" on both sides of the nose. The US national insignia is also airbrushed.

They were never used in dog fights that I know of, mostly used as recon, infiltration, or mock dog fights to train pilots. They were also studied by each side. The only known confirmed kill was by a P 38G Lightning flown by Col. Angelo Tondi (Italy) he shot down a B 17, the P38G he used landed by mistake in Capoterra, Italy and was using Italian national insignia when he shot down the B 17.

There are so many interesting stories about captured allied planes used by the Germans. I personally found it very interesting reading about Zirkus Rosarius, which was a special unit in the Luftwaffe testing allied planes that were captured.
But I must admit - I just look wrong
