Removal of Tampo Graphics

Post by Coreyeagle48 » Thu Jan 29, 2009 12:38 pm

Greetings:

There was a post in one of the custom projects about how you have to remove graphics before putting on primer. How do you guys do that? Do you lightly sand them off or use another way? I've never done that and would be curious to know.

Thanks

Corey

I heard acetone and not nail polish remover. There's too much other chemicals that dilute its effectiveness. Learned that from someone on the Model Hangar Diecast Forum. Tried it on an inconspicuous spot on my F-4. It worked taking black off, but it also smears a little of the paint underneath. Tried it on other planes. Discovered it will take flat paint off faster that gloss. But if flat paint is sprayed over the top of glossy, that's the best combination as it will only remove the flat and not mar the glossy. Now if it's the other way around, by the time the glossy paint is removed it's already soaked enough into flat to clear some of that. Then found if I dilute it 50/50 with water it takes some of its bite out. Worked much better that way..

BTW, anyone hear when the Model Hangar is going to back up?

Corey,
I haven't done it myself yet. But, from reading TKO211's custom mods thread (near the bottom of this custom/mods page) I don't think he takes off the tampo markings before priming and painting over. If you read thru the thread he talks about how he does his repaints and I don't remember him mentioning removing the tampo markings before painting over. He does often mask them so they are still present on a repaint scheme. But, several of his repaints he would have had to paint over some of the tampo markings.
If you've seen his repaints - they are beautiful jobs. He's really good with an airbrush. If tampo markings needed to be removed I'm guessing he'd know how to do it or if it is even necessary.
I'm interested in the answer to so if you figure it out post on here.
