Thanks Grunt1,
I'll take any ideas for brick siding I can get. In one of my other custom threads, "My Daughter's Playtable" I made a Harley Davidson dealership and covered it with some brick road bed. The only problem with that is it's only sold at WM during the X-Mas season. I would need alot of it to do this project.
Thanks, Kevin.

You make some Nazi saboteurs to go with it. Like in those 40's serials you see sometimes on TCM.

Shipping Crates.

Post by kevrut » Wed Aug 15, 2007 3:08 pm

While waiting for materials to finish the Back Shop the way I want to, I decided to make some smaller projects to fill the time.

I made four shipping crates for my 1942 Harley Davidson WLA's. I just used Skinny Sticks and glue. Harleys were broke down for shipping originally, but I just put two of these together the other day and didn't feel like taking them apart again. :)

Just enough room to fit in there.

Loaded in a gondola for shipping. Along with a bunch of oil drums. If you have a Harley, you need to keep some oil with you.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks guys.

They're all 1/18 scale models.

The crane was from a 1/16 Nylint truck.

I received my custom decals from a fellow forum member a while back. I just got around to putting them on my 1/18th scale 1937 Studebaker pick up. I made a trade with "Jackson" here on the forum. He made me quite a few custom decals for my railroad. This is just the first I'll be posting in the next few months.

Thanks, Kevin.

Yeah, it's taking me years to build,... so what!

Post by kevrut » Wed Nov 07, 2007 6:03 pm

I've done alot more in the last couple months, but I'm not done yet.

These are the window frames I made for the shop. I used two different sized square wooden dowels. The shop has 18 windows so far. The roof will have skylights.
<a href="http://img222.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010494bp3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/9750 ... bp3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

I made the walls out of foamboard. I traced the window frames and cut out the foamboard to glue in the windows.
<a href="http://img100.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010498ee0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/1360 ... ee0.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

Inside view. I painted the walls as I put it together.
<a href="http://img77.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010496kg9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/9481/1010496kg9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

I painted the floor gray to make a cement floor. Also hinged the main doors.
<a href="http://img215.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010506ca3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4025 ... ca3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

Also put windows above main doors. The service door is also hinged.
<a href="http://img219.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010544dd7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/3319 ... dd7.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

This is what I have done up to now. The brick roadbed is glued on the exterior walls.
<a href="http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010576yg1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/8631 ... yg1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img100.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010584le0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9928 ... le0.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010585km6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/382/ ... km6.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010586uj4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4683 ... uj4.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010592fd1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/8554 ... fd1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

<a href="http://img220.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010589lt9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/8028 ... lt9.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

I'll start plans for the roof next week. I might be done with this by the end of the month. That's all for now.

Thanks for looking.

Kevin.

Good to see how the brick paving works on walls. Real nice work on the windows, too.

Yes, I'm glad to see you found some brick that worked out.. :) Reasonably priced I hope! :D

Love the photo with the train engine peeking it's nose out the door. These projects of yours could be re-purposed to make an awesome Eastern front battle scene if we ever get some Ruskies..

Are you using a hot glue gun or something else to hold everything together?

Thanks Mitch and MM. :P

Grunt1, I just used Elmer's Wood Glue for everything. I got the roadbed at WM for $4 a roll. They're 30" long by 3.5" high. I had to buy about 10 of them to cover everything. I noticed that some rolls had a felt backing on them, that helps it stick to the foamboard alot better.

This is the last of the shop pics.
Instead of a flat roof, I went with the same design as the coal tower.

<a href="http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010623rm3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4245 ... rm3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

I cut the roof out for the skylights.
<a href="http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010640yw3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/5632 ... yw3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

I went with dormers instead of just flat skylights. I had to make six more windows.
<a href="http://img230.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010641mk5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/4286 ... mk5.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

Side view.
<a href="http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010684jm2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4131 ... jm2.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

Corner view.
<a href="http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010685pr0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/6818 ... pr0.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

View through a window.
<a href="http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010689ee4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/161/ ... ee4.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

Rail yard.
<a href="http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1010690yv1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/752/ ... yv1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us"></a>

The overall dimensions of the shop ended up being 31"long, 21.5" wide, and 28.5" tall.

Thanks, Kevin.

That building turned out real nice. I can't remember if you've mentioned it before - how big is the layout now?
