I agree, the C-47.

Paratroopers "jump" out of them.

Gliders are "pulled" by them.

This would be a cool addition to 1/18th! :P

Holy crap

A Dakota in 1:18 would be amazing.. Great marketing for the BBI paratroopers! :D

I can see guys now (no names mentioned) hooking this baby to a wire and shooting it between two tall trees trying to pop troops out the side. ;)

I am liking the sound of this...

That works out to 63 2/3 inch wingspan in 1:18 scale

Hot Damn…… I think I got it!

Read on…….

Father = General Bill Mitchell was often regarded as the father of the USAF (for Mitchell Bomber) (thank you Jericoeagle1 & tmanthegreat)

Oil = Jimmy Doolittle was named manager of the Aviation Department of Shell oil Company in which capacity he conducted numerous aviation tests.

Jump & Pull were your only options = The Jimmy Doolittle raiders had to fly their B-25s until they ran out of fuel and their only option was to "Jump and Pull" their ripcords.

It has to be a 1:18 B-25 Bomber

G’day All

As is custom I went for my lunchtime stroll (at 14:00) and while I was walking I tried to fit the current three and a half clues (the half being it is bigger than a Dauntless) around one of my favourite aircraft, I dare say the same method could used to argue any aircraft but here goes:

Ar234B Blitz

Father = The Ar234B Blitz was the first operational jet bomber and thus can be said to be the father of all Jet bombers that followed.

Oil = The Ar234B Blitz was aerodynamically a very slick aircraft design and the term greased lightening is a good one to apply to this aeroplane. Also and I’m sure someone will correct me if I wrong, the German Jet Fuel circa 1944 was a synthetic oil extracted from coal and was more like heating oil than petrol (gasoline).

Jump & Pull were your only options = The Ar234B Blitz was a relatively high performance aircraft, however as far as I know the bail out process was strictly conventional in that you Jump & Pull to hit the silk.

So there you have it, all wrong of course but I can dream can’t I.

------------

I also like JohnLumley justification for the B25 above.

Jason...

Your second and third hints were not prefaced with the "1:18" in the header of the message.

Was this intentional?

Hope all is well with you in China.

Alright, let me take you on a journey of what happened in my mind in pursuit of a possibility here....

Father = First of its kind.
Oil = took me to Texas
Jump and Pull = something without an ejection seat, where the pilot had to bail out the old fashioned way.

The answer: P-80A Shooting Star (I think it was also called the Widow Maker)

The P-80 was the first operational jet fighter for the US Army Air Corps. The P-80A model did not have an ejection seat and killed a good many pilots, including Richard Bong. An ejection seat was added to the B-model.

The oil part is the one that took me on a little journey. At first I thought, oil=Texas=General Dynamics. A little back tracking took me down the Convair route for a while, but then I noted that a while back, GD bought Canadair (for a while) and Canadair was the principal developer of the T-33, the trainer version of the P-80. Oh yes, and Lockheed purchased the aircraft assets of GD, and Lockheed was the developer of the P-80. And I know that Kevin Bacon had to be in there somewhere.

Well until we got the last hint - I was thinking a Texan..
Father - Texan trained more pilots than any other aircraft...

Oil - hmm texas

Now to make the last clue work...

Jump and pull (_hop 'n pop_): Pulling the ripcord immediately upon clearing the aircraft (within three seconds).

Or, how about this one:

Father = First to break the speed of sound.
Oil = Texan Chuck Yeager
Jump and Pull = Well known tale of Yeager having to use a broom stick handle to open the door if he had to bail out.

Wooohoooooooooo, Winner!!!! Bell X-1!!!

The Douglas Skyraider was known for its use and leaking of oil, but father doesn't fit unless they are talking about the father being the pilot.
Jericoeagle1,
I think you might be right on the money here. If I remember correctly, one of the discussions I had with Jason at the Houston airshow, I believe he mentioned that his father flew a Skyraider. This would cover the 'father' clue. The Skyraider had a huge 18-cylinder radial engine that leaked alot of oil. This would cover the 'oil' clue. As for the 'jump and pull' clue, I don't think the Skyraider was equiped an ejection seat.

This would make my guess the Skyraider.

So in my mind that makes it either a

1. Skyraider
2. Harrier
3. B-25D Model or above.

Anyone want to add to that list?

G'day Jason

Hook, this clue just sends me back on to the C47 trail again as I think the call for US paratroopers to attach their static lines to the cable was "Hook Up".

Image

Image

The C47 also deployed a hook system for aerial recovery of gliders from Normandy.

Yes I know that it's probably not this aircraft after all but a biscuit bomber would be interesting piece indeed and it might even swing some of the turret heads over to the dark side.

So do we have to guess the next scale of the aircraft too also?

father, oil, jump and pull only options, hook and much larger than a dauntlass.

So all guesses like Pipers and Arados etc are off base because they are not much larger than a dauntlass. A dauntlass was about the size of a stuka, so 'much larger' implies a twin engine or above sized plane to me. I don't think i'd even call the Avenger 'much larger' than a dauntlass.

B-25 is a good guess except for 'hook'. Even the Doolittle raiders didn't have hooks, since they didn't land back on the carriers. And jump and pull were your only options doesnt fit either, unless Jason got his grammar wrong. It should be phrased 'jump and pull was your only option'.

C-47is a good gess except i don't see how 'father' and 'oil' fit in. Plus it would be giant; very aggressive choice for a new company to make. And why make one when you don't sell complentary paratroop figures? You're doing BBI and 21c a big fafour. Technically speaking jump and pull werent' the only options for the c-47, since it was a cargo hauler too. But, for troops, jump and pull were the only options.

All that said, Jason has a tendancy to tell us when nobody has guessed right. And this time he wouldnt comment either way, which suggests to me that someone did guess it.

I would say the short list is:

B-25, C-47, F-14 and Skyraider....even though, seemingly, none of them fit all the clues.

Oh, and forgive me if this post has lots of typos. I'm doing it without my glasses.....heh.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...
