New tactic seen on "Dogfights"

Post by Threetoughtrucks » Sat Sep 08, 2007 9:57 pm

Recently "Dogfights" showed a group of P-51's escorting bombers when they spotted a strange German flight of FW-190 attacking the bombers...

The German were flying in a very tight box, almost wingtip to wingtip and were flyng eight abreast and ten rows deep. Eighty FW-190's. Each row was a little higher than the row in front so all eighty planes could blast the bombers at once...

An unbelievable formation. Their cannon fire made a mess out of our bombers before the P-51's broke up the formation.

I never heard of this type of formation before....have you guys?

I would never believe it, if the guy telling the story wasn't the P-51 pilot who dove down and broke up the FW-190 formation by firing into the first row of FW's instead of the usual practice of hitting the last guys first..

Suicide mission !

Post by MG-42 » Mon Sep 10, 2007 2:27 am

Yeah ,.. I seen this one. ... It was a kamikaze mission for some of these brave krauts.

They actually "rammed" part of the formation in strategic places on the Bombers.

Quite a shocking scene for B crew-members. .... quite a shocking scene for me too. ... Yeah ,.. this was a particularily good episode to watch. 8)

I forget which type of these Bombers were actually involved , B-24 / 25 & or 17 . ... Sheesh ! ...

I think we are talking about two different episodes. The sucide missions for the Germans WAS unbelievable but the episode I am talking about a very, very tight FW-190 formation of 80 (Eighty) planes attacking bombers keeping the fighter formation and firing all 80 planes cannons at the same time. They basted dozens of bombers on the first pass.

AWESOME.

I would really like to see this particular episode in question , however. = 8)

I hope it's repeated soon.

There were a few episodes shown in the last two weeks. One was on dogfights at very low level and I believe that was the one with this strange box formation with 80 FW-190's flying wingtip to wingtip.

This P-51 pilot breaks up the formation and has to fly through raining parachutes twisting and turning to avoid the dozens and dozens of parachuteing crewnen from the bombers. The P-51 chases a FW-190 straight down to ultra low levels, under 40 feet.

Great show.

The other show was gun battles in VN, starting with Douglas Skyraiders shooting down a Mig-17 which was the first Mig shot down over North VN. Great flying shots of the Skyraiders.......almost enough to make me pre-order one.......I would too, except for the fact that I pre-ordered a Dauntless and was forced to pay the pre-order in full. This was in January and still no release date. It leaves a real bad taste in your mouth for pre-orders.

I have pre-ordered plenty of items. Most e-tailers require a small deposit to hold an item for you. I've paid up to one half of the sugested price as a pre-order. This AT Dauntless was the first 100% pre-order, that the e-tailer looks like will be holding on to for a year or more. It sure turns me off AT for any future release. I wouldn't even object with a wait of five or six months....but a year or more? Not good business in my way of thinking.

"Yeah ,.. that really sucks " 3 TTT ".

I'll take that back too " triple TTT " ,.. I did however pre-order the bbi "cat mouth" Hellcat @ Badcat for $49.95 .... I just had forgotten already that I did. "Sometimers I guess , sometimes I forget". =

Well ,.. I hope you get your AT SBD-2 "Dauntless" , sometime in "the not so distant future" , as I will eventually order one myself.
