I think there was a PBS special at one time about this massive Japanese sub and how close we came to another sneak attack by the Japanese.

Ah yeah to bomb the Panama Canal, I remember reading about that. I don't know how much damage they could have caused but even minor damage in the right place could have shut down the locks for a while while repairs were done.

The attack would have had a psychological effect, however, such a move would have only strengthened our resolve and made life that much harder for the Japanese.

BTW, earlier in the war in 1942, a Japanese submarine did shell Goleta (Santa Barbara) in California :shock:

They did the same thing off the coast of British Columbia. Although the only thing they hit was a lighthouse.
