For P-51 fans. What plane is it?

The caption on yesterdays ESPN College Basketball page had the following photo with the caption of: NCAA Basketball All-American.

That could be any number of P-51s. Looks unpainted as a whole in the shot, so a silver P-51. Has nose art and the paint strip to block the sun reflection above the engine.

I think the more important question is: Of the audience targeted by this poster, how many of them are going to recognize that the aircraft is a P-51D (and the greatest US fighterplane of WWII) at all?


Sort of reminds me of an old CSU Fresno (Fresno State) Bulldogs football team poster I found once that had a couple of the star players from 1986 standing next to a then-locally-based California ANG F-4 Phantom 8)

Yeah, good eyes VMF 115. Bob Baranaskas out of NY owns that plane. His son Chris now flies it as Bob flies a P-40. That was the plane I proposed to my now wife in! (no no no, we weren't in the air! ) :D
