Now that was cool information! Especially since we have a few abondoned WWII runways in Virginia Beach. Glad to learn a little history about Creeds Airfield and Pungo Airfield! In addition Creeds was used as a dragstrip for quite a few years also and Pungo was used by the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) for races in the 70's. I know, because I won and lost there many years ago!
Although Fentress Airfield is still used for touch -n- go practice it is a great place to watch R/C planes fly on weekends!

Great info! I know of a few remaining WW2 airfields/bases in west texas that trained B-29, para-gliding, B-17 and B-25 crews.

There are even west texas towns that were bought up by the government, everyone relocated and the entire town used as target practice.

I know in Ocala Fl there was a WW2 traing airfield. Its all been swollowed up now by shopping malls. But there are still a few hangers that are now in use for industrial purposes. Cant find any info on it.

That's funny. I always wondered why the road that leads to the Milford, DE Walmart was called Airport Road. The store was built on an old airport!

Wow. What wonders exist on the "net"...........

I always have known about "Miller Field" here on Staten Island and have been facinatined by the submarine lookout on the beach watching for U-Boats. I always thought it just was a bunker, part of NYC WW2 defenses.

I knew about the major mid air collision in 1960 with the "Connie" crash landing in Miller Field and the larger plane crashing in 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. I never thought Miller Field had any other "claim to fame". Just double Wow, and a seaplane ramp to boot.
