Bam is right. That thing wasn't just out of comission.. it was just plain gone..
Wish they had some other way to test these puppies, don't they know how many of us would love to have our very own T-72 or M-48?

There's some pictures that go along with that test that shows the debris field. How far that tank got scattered is amazing.

Notice how the missile impacted from a near vertical attitude? That's how the newer generation of shoulder fired AT missiles are able to wreak such havoc on armored vehicles, by attacking them where the armor is thinner and thus more vulnerable. My guess is that the missile caused a secondary internal fuel and/or ammunition explosion which added to the awesome carnage we viewed. Great stuff, thanks for sharing it.

NZ is buying those, luckily training can be done with simulators since at $NZ 100,000 each we can't afford to waste any.

the tank was loaded with a full fuel and ammo load but nothing else (ie no additional combustible materials to enhance the effect). So the explosion you see could easily happen on the battlefield.
The Javelin has a double hollow charge warhead. The first is to defeat any reactive armour that may be on the target and the second is the main charge to penetrate the vehcile's hull. It's a large charge and produces a significant stream of molten metal at extremely high velocity. That's why the huge explosion, as everthing combustible inside the tank was ignited at once.
Javelin has two firing modes; top attack for armour and side attack for buildings, bunkers etc. The gunner just chooses the mode, aims, locks on the sensor with the press of a button, fires and forgets. No need to keep a cursor on the target as the missile is self guiding.
(i should be a salesman for these things)
