That could be anything from an accident to a major cover up of sabotage. Maybe even a hijack. It sounds like all the passengers and crew either died inside the plane before it sunk, were killed after leaving the plane or were picked up by the wrong people and disappeared forever. However, planes and ships have disappeared before without a trace. The part about the note in the can is eerie though.
