Interesting... Sort of like "The Final Countdown" type scenario, except going back way further. One way the Marines could survive would be to take the more guerrilla warfare/insurgency type approach and recruit people to their own side. At the height of the Empire, the Romans really weren't good at fighting guerilla warfare (as the Emperor Augustus' general, Varus, found out in the Teutoburg Forest in 9AD when Germanic warriors ambushed and destroyed 3 Roman legions) and their army depended on size, strength, and cohesion of their main force to be successful. There would also very likely be communities and even corrupt Roman officials that would throw their lot in with the Marines given the success of their initial battle efforts. This was again shown historically on numerous occasions when, say, a successful Roman general in the provinces was able to create a rival army supplied by local troops due to that general's prowess on the battlefield, charisma, or the size of his pocketbook.
