Auschwitz 70th anniversary: Survivors warn of new crimes

I just saw a BBC segment on how Dr. Mengle liked to experiment on twins and some of the survivors stories.
The cruelty inflicted on not just Jews, Gypsies, etc. but especially their children brought a tear to my eyes. Though if you were a twin likely you had a better chance at surviving even though experimented on.
Still trying to wrap my head around what kind of a mentality can be like this on such a massive level?
