Small Scale Military Headquarters

This may have been posted before but i thought it would be cool if
we could start a list of war flicks out there, as I am always trying
to find ones I've never seen. Since there are alot I'm thinking of the less obvious ones. Here is a start, this one recently came out,
I rented it from Netflix, (Come and see) it was made in 1985 in USSR.
It looks like it was made this year, anyway a good story about a boy who
joins up fighting the Germans invading Russia.

One of my all-time favorites is a documentary called "Night Bombers". I saw it playing at the RAF Hemswell Antique Center back in 97'. It is a hour's worth of original color footage of a Lancaster bombing mission out of Hemswell filmed in 1944. I bought the PAL version from the UK a month or so ago and it plays perfectly well on the PC. I can't recommend it enough. It is the only color footage of the Lancaster from WWII. Great stuff!!

There are so many to list...

I rented a new war flick this last weekend called
El alamein. Its a Italian made movie thats very good quality, it
came out about two years ago i think, anyway it tells about
the battle from their point of view, not alot of action but great story.
And yes you have to read the dam thing, but worth it.

Whenever I see a thread about this Im always amazed that Memphis Belle makes the list, to me its about one of the most inaccurate, sappy movies ever made.

Here's one you don't here about too offten but in my opinion the best
one about B-17 Bombers; The War Lover, with Steve Mcqueen.

Surprised no one mentioned Patton! What a grat movie. One of my favorites.

Other movies.. Empire of the Sun has THE most gorgeous P-51D Mustang moment EVER in cinematography... those who seen it know what I mean. Literally gives meaning to Cadillac in the Skies!

Saving Private Ryan is my all time favorite, it's what got my heavily into World War 2. I owe a lot to that movie and Steven Spielberg.

Band of Brothers, I skipped night classes to watch the show when it first aired and would come home early from work. IMO, it's the closest thing to come to Saving Private Ryan's level. It was some of the best $75 I've spent for a DVD set too later when it came out. I still watch the series quite often. I can't wait for 'The Pacific' sequel to the series.

Memphis Belle... While high inaccurate, still a great portrayal of a B-17 Flying Fortress crew during World War 2... a bit steriotypical though. This movie was the inspiration for the hour long screenplay/script I wrote called 'Target: Berlin' that someday I'd love to see get made into a movie about the debated first bombing of Berlin.

Longest Day, classic. Love it. A Bridge Too Far was pretty good. 12 'O Clock High has a special place mostly because the 'star' B-17 Flying Fortress 'Picadilly Lilly' is actually our B-17 at thje Planes of Fame Museum.

YES!! Finally someone around here who also loves that moment! (Though given your screen name, small wonder ) I practically cry evey time I see that part - Jim's pent-up emotions welling over, John Williams moving score, the sound of the Merlin engines, the straffing and bombs. I always sort of identified with Jim's character. That is a great cenematic moment and a poetic tribute to the best fighterplane of WWII. ...and to think, it was done with real aircraft and no CG effects!

LOVE THE FILM ENIGMA, CRACK THE CODE. A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING IN THIS ONE.

"CROSS of IRON" .....is my favorite,.....starring : James Coburn,...Maximillion Schell,..and James Mason, + a few others. .....One of the best films about the "Eastern Front" ever made. ....Based on a True Story,...and book by "Willie Heidrich" ! ....in which I also read. ...I actually have it on DVD too,.. which is "rare". ...If you like "War" movies,...I highly reccommend this one then. ***** A must see !

If you like Empire of the Sun, you will like "End All Wars" Excellent movie about UK POWs in Thailand. "Saints and Soldiers" is another sleeper about Malmedy and the BoB. Pick up "The Big Lift"if you are an aircraft nut. Excellent, made in Berlin in 1946, movie about the airlift. Finally, for the WW1 guys, "The Lost Battalion" is excellent even though A&E had a hand in it. Very true to the book and historically correct.

Please dont take offense, but I was suprised that Midway made someone`s list. I saw it once as a kid and then I recently picked it up on special at WM. If you watch Tora, Tora,Tora and then Midway you will see too many stolen shots taken from TTT and spliced into Midway. The persistant views of the angled deck carrier are kind of aggravating. It reeked of 1970`s through and through. Cheap and not well thought out.

I was glad to see the "Big Red One" didnt make any lists. I forgot how bad that movie was especially with the blaring loud speaker exchanges on the beaches of French Morraco in the Torch invasions and then the huggy kissy scene after that battle. Eewwww ! And then the over representation of condoms on the ends of rifles made me think Trojan was one of the producers. It was a good concept to make a movie about the 1st Infantry Division, but too much money spent on stars and not on advisors...

Many excellent titles mentioned by you guys, Though. keep up the good work.

Escape to Athena, anybody seen that?

I forgot about this one made in the 60's.
"The Bridge", about a group of very young germans who get drafted
out of school towards the end of the war to defend germany
from the invading americans.
Based on a true story, very good, sad ending.
Also more recent "Tears of the Sun" & "Behind enemy Lines"

Just saw 12 O'Cloch High for the first time. Although not particurly impressed with the storyline, the cineamatography is very good. I truely enjoyed the many, many shots of the B-17s
