So what? The fact he kept leaving base to go off wandering is pretty bad in and of itself. Maybe not as bad as actual desertion, but certainly punishable considering people got killed looking for his jokester ass.

He's still not worth the potential damage the release of the five Taliban will likely cause.

Dunno, maybe they need some Taliban agitators on the northern flank of Iran when we leave Afghanistan?

A couple of these guys are guilty of massacring many Shiite Iranians and no love between the two.
The Sunni Taliban were brutal pre-war. I guess sending them to Qatar for a year they'll be living in sympathetic surroundings. Wouldn't want them to spend their R&R time with our other allies Saudi Arabia probably wouldn't look to good.

I do believe they were due to be released within a year with the end of hostilities. Who knows what kind of deal is the ultimate goal.

What's disconcerting to me is what kind of a deal was cut? No communications with congress which is required by law. Way too much arrogance with this current administration. I get the feeling there are a lot of secret agreements, which we will painfully learn about in the future...

Actually it was brought up to a committee of congress earlier this year. A recent video of Sgt. Bergdahl was shown to ranking members showing he was in distress, to get permission to do something.
A few on the other side of the isle were not convinced. Hence it never came up for a decision.

Just like a veterans bill to improve things at the VA was filibustered in February by the other side. It doesn't matter if it was good for our vets. These are things you aren't hearing from the "liberal" media.

I'm afraid the old saying "It takes an act of congress to (not) get things done" applies. I don't think the process would have been expedited and his release secured soon enough.

Not saying the decision was right to bypass the gobstoppers, but think of the firestorm if he was beheaded.

John Kerry says freed Taliban leaders won't kill more US soldiers.
(I heard from a reliable source that Kerry had the freed Taliban leaders promise on a stack of Bibles that they will check in with their probation officer once a year).
